Google News Sitemap Index Count Bug Will Take A Long Time To Fix

As we've reported twice before, the Google News sitemap index count is inaccurate and has been for a long time. Google told us in March, it is something they are working on fixing but maybe not?

Gary Illyes from Google responded to an SEO on that topic and said on Twitter that the news sitemap index count issue will "take a while to fix."

That to me implies they haven't begun looking into it, seeing it only impacts a small percentage of Google Search Console Sitemaps users.

Gary wrote:

I was hoping it would have been fixed by now, but I can understand that Google has priorities and News publishers are probably not at the top of those priorities.
