Here is the video from last week's SMX Advanced last week with Matt Cutts and Danny Sullivan. In the video you will find a lot of what we covered, specifically Matt announcing the Payday loan algorithm going live the next day, the new reconsideration request rejection notices and the metafilter story. Plus a couple of other things.

Here are the times for the main points he made:

Here is the video:

You can see how I was confused with the Metafilter part...

Here are our stories coming out of it:

Couldn't you have given Matt a few babies to throw instead? Maybe with some bathwater?

Durant would have caught them for him.

What a trainwreck. Wonder why Matt doesn't support his own company and wear a Go$$gle Ass?? There is a ton of irony here. Go$$gle actually talking about caring about SEO and what SEO's think or have for them as news, when Go$$gle has told SEO's that it hates them and wants them to all die. All that needs to be said is this from Cutts: "SEO is dead. You are dead to me. Just use Pay per Click in Go$$gle adwords period. Nice meeting you go away and die and let your families starve to death to."

"Go$$gle actually talking about caring about SEO and what SEO's think or have for them as news, when Go$$gle has told SEO's that it hates them and wants them to all die." Can always depend on you to know nothing and treat your ignorance as an affront from Google. Google hates spammers, as does everyone who isn't a spammer. The droves of 'SEOs' had turned the SERPs to crap, where site quality, usefulness, and relevance meant nothing for ranking. Simply throw some money at fiver and build some links and any site could climb the rankings. That is the real irony, that those who were finally penalized for their spamming and breaking the guidelines now complain about how bad they feel the SERP quality is. Funny how they didn't care about quality when they were busy ruining it and pushing any site that would pay to the top. People like 'Yo Mamma' can't make money by exploiting the ignorance of mom and pop operations or the loopholes in the guideline enforcement and can only justify their being caught by screaming about how awful Google is and how they 'hate small business'. Can't operate in this industry anymore? Good riddance!

If I know nothing (the post above is from ETHALON who deleted it after my most excellent counter, now shows as GUEST), why do you find the need to answer? Do you think that most people that read my nothingness, will not realize that its nothing? Or are you suggesting that most people, unlike you, are stupid and really need someone like you to enlighten them and guide them through the stupidity and nothingness that evades their senses? No You answer my comments because you know that they are true. You answer my comments because you know that they are true and YOU want to interject your lies and negativity in an attempt to sway fringe G$$GLE naysayers. Which ethie, are a growing group All you do is validate my opinion and for that I must thank you

I didn't mean to delete that comment, so I hope it remains posted as 'guest'. I don't validate your opinion. I fear for novices who may come across comment sections on sites like this (one which ranks highly for SEO information and one that I personally enjoy) and may mistake your thought-free-vitriol and 'guest' upvotes as indicative of the SEO or Google's anti-spam actions. Even more so, I fear for small business owners who got screwed by dishonest SEOs who have and continue to peddle overpriced 'packages' that do nothing but spam and ensure the destruction of their sites ability to rank on Google. I fear that they come online looking for answers and find an article they may not fully understand through no fault of their own and then read through comments like yours and others (not so much yours as they have declined into insanity lately) and are left even more confused and less informed. Worse, they may leave thinking Google is just screwing them to force them into AdWords (give me a break) and continue to find dishonest SEOs to correct the issues they are having from the last one. People looking for quick and easy results are easy prey for people who have no sense of morals or care for the industry which they claim to operate in.

PS: I deleted the comment because I apparently don't fully understand the disqus platform or how to edit my posts, I was happy to find it remaining as 'guest', grammatical errors be damned.

How do you think these poor little no clue businesses find the spammy dishonest SEO´s? Oh yes, google and google adwords. So rather than being the solution to the problem, google is a major part of the problem. The sooner google dies the better for the world. Google will die as all things do because when businesses go from cool to uncool as google has, it does not take an awful lot longer for death to arrive.

ethalon

06/20/2014 02:35 pm

It's almost like the spammers spammed themselves first and foremost. And Google is attempting to fix the issue...yet that makes them the bad guy somehow?

Google-oh-so-cool

06/20/2014 02:46 pm

If google attempting to fix the issues means taking money via adwords to lead poor unsuspecting small businesses to the clutches of the spamming SEOs, then they are doing a great job. If google fixing the spamming issues means giving top positions in google to spamming SEO´s so they can be found by poor unsuspecting small businesses then again they are doing a great job. You will never see that google themselves created the landscape for spam and they continue to profit from it and feed it. At the same time they are collecting the cash, they are telling fools like you how hard they are working to stop it all. If they wanted to stop it they could . It just does not suite them to do that though as you can clearly see by the 2 examples I listed.

Haswyg

Perhaps Durant will give you a hug for defending him.

Google-oh-so-cool

06/20/2014 03:15 pm

Small businesses who use google as part of their marketing mix deserve everything they get when they take on a dodgy SEO they found at the top of google or through adwords. Small businesses should analyse the DNA of the google webmaster guidelines line by line to understand exactly what google wants. Small businesses who open a shop in the bronx without security measures deserve to get robbed and rightly so google should punish them for hiring a spammy SEO it advertised in it´s no responsibility for anything search engine. Small businesses are a plague because they are like drug users and they feed the ambitions of the drug dealers. Only for drug dealer read SEO and for user read someone trying to do business. Small businesses are the scourge of google and without their need for better rankings their would be no spam on the internet. Oh except all those really crap sites that are just there to get adsense revenue. That 98% of the web that relies on getting a google pay check to write crap and populate the internet with crap. But that crap is OK cause google likes that crap. Because that crap entices in people looking for stuff through the adwords and google gets cash for that. When google stops all the hypocrisy and the crocodile tears they might then be able to really tackle the problem of spam. Until then they are a very big part of the problem.

Not using disqus often shows something about me and SEO?

Jamo

06/20/2014 04:30 pm

Well, well, well, nice work there. I agree that small businesses are the new sources of a lot of spam, mainly because they need to fight against Google's preferences towards brands. I think this goes beyond Google and points directly at greed. I have worked for more than one business who's main goal was to punish their competitors and would do just about anything to accomplish their goal. Google has allowed spam to work (and still works) for far too long so they are complicit in that. The other issue here is that the other tech companies have allowed Google to acquire their dominant market share (greed again!!). And that has also contributed to the issues you mention re: small businesses. They have no where else to go.

Jamo

06/20/2014 04:35 pm

LOL, Alfred E. Sullivan. That seems about right. I haven't been in this game nearly as long as some of you but has Danny ever done any SEO? He publishes articles about striking issues in SEO and its the same thought I get from some of these other folks like Moz, do you do SEO? They just seem like publishers getting $$$ from AdSense. Barry does do SEO, he has his own firm so I get that.

Nothing to hide != nothing to lose PLUS a disqus account is NOT a verified identity... So unless you are going to share your real SSN and mother's maiden name then everyone's real name is NONE OF YOUR GOD DAMN BUSINESS.

Mark Warner

06/20/2014 06:56 pm

Never said it was or wasn't, nor did I ask you anything. It wasn't an essay question.

A Novice

06/20/2014 06:59 pm

You say: "by dishonest SEOs who have and continue to peddle overpriced 'packages'" Fell over laughing that your concern is that the dishonest SEOs packages are overpriced. Google is screwing businesses to force them into adwords... Search "used cars" on a laptop expand to full screen... There is 1 organic result above the fold... THE WHOLE REST OF THE SCREEN is ads. That fact that state to the contrary makes you the dishonest one. Novices don't need your kind of help.

In a public forum where where it is optional and they have already opted out of doing so. Yes. And you're only purpose in asking is to cause harm. What was your kind and noble intension? How about you post your email an phone number and if he needs your help he'll contact you. JERK!

Mark Warner

Not sure why you are trying to find out where I live, I find that a bit odd as it wouldn't have much to do with my expertise or the businesses that I associate with.

06/20/2014 07:49 pm

You've got an "irritating little twit" thing going on too. I could do without most of your comments. Should we ban you too?

Yo Mamma

06/20/2014 07:50 pm

I could care less

Mark Warner

06/20/2014 07:50 pm

There's a fair point in there, but a lot of people seem to agree with that person so I don't think it would cause harm. My intention was to try and figure out how much I should listen to this person or ignore them. If that turned out to be someone that has had great success, it would matter.

My apologies to Barry for the mass derailment of your comment thread on this article. You should consider coding the site to show ads next to the comments section, seems that area is on fire this last month:) This a a great video, will have to watch the second half tonight.

Barry Schwartz

06/20/2014 08:11 pm

At least the distracting parts are mostly threaded?

Mark Warner

06/20/2014 08:16 pm

I see, yes, they are showing indented/threaded... I guess once it gets like 20 comments long in a reply thread it just look like the rest of the comments would - threaded or not.. In either case, thanks for posting the vid and my apology stands.

:( Google has done the below shit with their shitty algorithm!

Ashley

06/21/2014 07:05 pm

Disappointed with Danny's questions. He could have got so much more info out of Matt. For example; if a negative seo attack happens within a few of weeks of a penguin update, does google ignore those recent links? It does not give a webmaster time to find the bad links and disavow them. Someone could constantly build bad links to attack/demote a site and the webmaster never has chance to recover.

Many people says Google wants SEOs to die according to this video. G is on the move to make the web better in terms of user experience, not on the basis of how Good the SEO of the website is, yeh that's certainly you also want to have unless you are an SEO. Google wants Webmasters to design the website according to the Google quality guidelines and not to leave the job to some SEOs. Matt even said he wants to interact more with site owners, not just SEOs. That doesn't mean he want to completely avoid SEOs, but he wants things done with out SEOs also. If some site owner can do all the SEO work himself then thats fine. But as you know people wont do that and there is still work for SEOs
