Excited? Upset? Sad? Angry? Yes, Google has updated the PageRank you see in the Google Toolbar.
We have several reports at WebmasterWorld and DigitalPoint Forums. Plus there are lots of tweets from webmasters on the topic.
Earlier this month, there were some sporadic reports of a PR update but it wasn't as wide spread at these reports.
As I said then, "Google keeps telling them not to worry about PageRank but SEOs don't hear or listen. They think SEO is all about PageRank, when you and I know it has very little to do with PageRank. Especially Toolbar PageRank which is a fictional character used by Google's marketing department."
Anyway, I hope your PageRank in the Toolbar went up or remained the same. Although it has no immediate impact on rankings and is way out of date, many webmasters and SEOs take pride in their Toolbar PageRank.

I have seem some great jumps in pagerank across my network of sites, and none dropping. Although this doesn´t really affect my traffic, it is still nice to see the little green bar!

Some people don't know anything about PR. One webmaster who got a drop said he expected it because he linked out to many sites since the last update. PR has nothing to do with the number of outgoing links (unless they are to spam sites) but all to do with the number of high-quality incoming links. Some people will never learn and keep spreading misinformation.

Hey Henry, where did you hear that outbound links are not part of the PageRank calculation? According to all of the published versions of the PageRank calculation (to my knowledge), # outbound links of a page have always been a part of the calculation. quoted from http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html: "We assume page A has pages T1...Tn which point to it (i.e., are citations). The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85. There are more details about d in the next section. Also C(A) is defined as the number of links going out of page A. The PageRank of a page A is given as follows: PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn)) Note that the PageRanks form a probability distribution over web pages, so the sum of all web pages' PageRanks will be one."

More than SEOs, CEOs seem to take pride in the TBPR. No matter how many times I said it was fictional. I always had to have the same discussion every time it changed.... Having said that the only changes I've seen are some brand new sites of mine changing from n/a to zero.

We can see it here in India as well. Seems this time Google was a bit stingy in granting PR. We have got PR upgrades all across the board but very marginal.

Webmasters are still running after PageRank because Google stated in their corporate tech page "Today we use more than 200 signals, including PageRank, to order websites, and we update these algorithms on a weekly basis."

My blog's page rank STAYS AT 4. But I don't give a rats ass! I still rank in the top 3 in Google (1 in my country) for my main terms 'hardstyle' and 'hardstyle music'. I hate 'page rank'. If you're call yourself an SEO - YOU SHOULDN'T CARE!!!!

I have about 30 different blogs and websites I manage, and noticed some very weird PR changes this time around, see post: http://www.blogtips.org/google-pagerank-update-january-2011/ 1. none of my new blogs ( up to 6 months old) got ranked 2. some existing blogs got quite a jump 3. good content does not seem to be king, with this new PR cycle... "Content" updates seem to matter more. P

Does anyone know why my website http://www.digitalswitchover.co.uk remains at PR0 for two years (since it has been live) while http://www.uconi.com is not being updated for a year and has gone up from PR1 -> PR2? Appreciate your expert advice of how to improve the PR as quite some effort is going into it :-)

Out of 38 websites only one was updated. New sites that were created about 9 months ago are all still at zero. I have one site that went from 150 pages to almost 900 pages since the last pagerank update and the pagerank is still the same (pagerank 2). I also get tired of hearing how pagerank doesn't matter because it does. In reality, it really doesn't matter, but sites with no or low pagerank often have trouble getting links from other sites because most webmasters believe pagerank is important and won't link to low pagerank sites. So, even if pagerank really doesn't matter, the behavior of many webmasters causes pagerank to matter. I hope this makes sense.

Its was a long awaited update in the history of Google. I am happty get a long jump from P3 to PR 6 for my site http://www.morecoloringpages.com . I worked hard on http://imo.live2support.com but stil it has PR0. I think reason is sub domain. Next update may be helpful.

I am amazed that people still follow this pattern . I do not go much on the Page Rank Good traffic can be generated from the website which is low in Page Rank. Top rankings can bring up the business but the PR is just a term which needs to be maintained in the long Run. Website like http://www.green-chillies.com has less PR but the lead conversion ration for them is really high.

Henry "PR has nothing to do with the number of outgoing links" No no no no no no Pagerank is a pure calculation giving a score for a webpage. This calculation is fed by incoming links and external links are a drain. There is very little that you can put a definite figure on in SEO, but pagerank is a quantifiable absolute. We have the means to work out what it will be (admittedly with old algorithms, but close enough)

We saw a couple of client pages drop in TB Rank, but on deeper investigation their main category pages actually went up. While we're well aware that PR obsession isn't very useful, it is a tangible for clients don't have time to investigate deeper.

I' agree. We also have few websites whiwh are more than 12 month old, and PR sill at zero. Here is the example: http://www.ecofuelbox.com this site is quite well referenced and get google 1-10 place for most importantand relevant keywords. However google PR doesn't move up. But another website which is only few month old have PR2 now. Kinda strange

I own an ecommerce website, but I'm not worrying about Pagerank anymore. Since the goal of search engines is to find exactly what someone is looking for, I'm really concentrating on "original content" more than anything else. New posts to my blog, which has no PR, usually show up pretty high in organic search results.

Interesting, Have anybody noticed the correlation between Google page speed and PR update. Last time PR update was taking place Google failed to update webmaster Page Speed report for about 2 weeks. Guess what? Its starting all over again, Google haven't update its Page Speed since 15th of May. We assume PR update is around the corner (within 1-2 weeks)
