Yahoo Partners With Google, Not Microsoft on UK's BT Portal

BT.com, a major UK portal, was powered by Yahoo Search, but is now being powered by Google Search. Why is this a big deal? Well, the portal is a partnership of some sort between Yahoo and BT, i.e. it is hosted at bt.yahoo.com.

Now we all know that Yahoo and Microsoft have made a big deal, where Microsoft will hopefully take control of all of Yahoo's search technology and power that side of their business.

So why did Yahoo partner up with Google on this portal and not Microsoft Bing?

This is not recent news, I reported this back in August based on a ConnectedInternet tip. Here is a screen capture:

Yahoo Portal - Search Powered By Google

Eventually, Yahoo said all their properties will be "powered by Bing Search."

A WebmasterWorld thread said that BT members just received emails from BT saying:

Your BT Yahoo! Search is now powered by Google, the UK’s most popular search engine.

This shouldn't confuse anyone down the road.

Google and Yahoo Break Up, End Their Advertising Agreement

The Google Blog has big news -- Google and Yahoo have decided to kill their advertising agreement. The reasons cited are that the government has been reviewing the agreement but they are not happy with it. Further, some advertisers are having problems with it too. Instead of pursuing a legal battle, Google and Yahoo have decided to part ways, which is unfortunate for those who really wanted this to happen.

This is hardly a scratch for Google and many think that Yahoo really is the one that hurts the most. At the end of the day, most reflect back on Yahoo's decision to nix the Microsoft deal and wonder if they would have done that now.

Microsoft Backs Off Yahoo & Drops Offer

Over the weekend, Microsoft finally backed off Yahoo and has decided to pull their offer to buy Yahoo and also decided they would not pursue a hostile takeover of the company. That sums it up basically. Now, if you want to read more, let me send you to Search Engine Land where we covered the news extensively.

Yes, this weekend's news is still dominating Techmeme's front page. So again, if you want to read Microsoft's letter to Yahoo or Yahoo's response or future thoughts, check out those links.

Many now believe Yahoo will begin outsourcing their search ads to Google. The advertisers want it based on the past test, it seems like Yahoo and Google both enjoyed it. So we should hear some news on that this week.

Yahoo! Outsources its Messenger Phone Calls to Jajah

According to a Yahoo News report, Yahoo will be outsourcing the Internet telephone functions of its instant messaging program to the startup Jajah.

Of course, this is great news for the startup -- but forum members wonder why Yahoo seems to be outsourcing a lot of its internal affairs. However, that may not necessarily be a bad thing, as another forum member says. The less important things are fine if outsourced; the more important things are when one needs to worry. As long as they focus on what they're good at and keep it internal (web, email, search), that's the way to go and avoids the distractions that can cause the company to go into turmoil.

Yahoo's Q1 Profits: $542.2 Million

Yahoo News reports on Yahoo's Q1 earnings of $542.2 million, which is substantially higher than 2007's Q1 earnings of $142.4 million.

Forum members are hoping there can be insights into this financial gain. WebmasterWorld moderator martinibuster quotes Jerry Yang's comment: "Not only does Yahoo! have a unique franchise, it increasingly has industry-leading tools, technology and, most importantly, people."

He adds that Yahoo is shutting down their tools that aren't yielding results (e.g. Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Music Jukebox). It's interesting to note that Yang says that Yahoo has great people, though. Does he also mean the employees that were laid off in January?

Bigreds Sues Yahoo Over Click-Fraud For $1 Million

Bigred Sues Yahoo for $1 MillionBigreds, an internet retailer has decided to sue Yahoo for $1 million over click fraud starting back in 2002. Yahoo offered Bigreds $17,000 back, but Bigreds wants more and they are suing for over $1 million in damages and penalties.

I wanted to pull out some of the best comments on this lawsuit, which you can read more about at InformationWeek, from a WebmasterWorld thread:

Look if you are going to build your billion dollar business around PAYPERCLICK then you should probably have systems, people, backups for the most obvious exploit.

It's the modern day equivalent of a bank without a safe.

Um, i'm looking at this site, and I really don't see how any traffic would convert, regardless of whether it's fradulent or not. Sorry Red, but I'm thinking that maybe the lawyers are the only ones that are going to come out ahead here.
I don't really see the problem with advertisers bringing suits against garbitrage because the advertiser foots the bill for the middle man market they create.

Decide for yourself...

You Got Three Weeks Yahoo, Said Microsoft; Give Us More Money, Responds Yahoo

Microsoft's CEO, Ballmer, sent Yahoo's board members a public letter saying:

If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors for the Yahoo! board.

Basically, if you do not accept our offer in three weeks, then we will acquire you another way.

The news flew through the blogosphere and news pipelines, you can see a piece of that articles and blog posts at Techmeme.

There is some discussion on this at the forums. If you want to read SEO and Webmaster reactions, check out WebmasterWorld and DigitalPoint Forums.

Personally, this just seems like corporate bullying done through the PR teams. I wonder how Yahoo's shareholders will see this and how this will impact any decision Yahoo makes. Thankfully, I am not in Yang or Decker's shoes right now.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld and DigitalPoint Forums.

Then this morning, Yahoo responds that they have rejected their offer. Not because they are opposed to a deal with Microsoft, but because they feel the price under values what Yahoo is worth. In short, Microsoft, if you want us, give us more money.

Yahoo News INTITLE Operator Not Functioning

If you try to conduct a title search in Yahoo news, you will fail. Both Yahoo and Google give you a method of searching for keywords that match in just the headline of the article. To do so, you can go to the Yahoo News Advanced Search page and select "in the headline of the article" as shown here:

Yahoo News Headline Search

An alternative method, if you are a speed searcher, is to use the intitle: operator. For example, to find all matching headlines for the keyword "google" in Yahoo News, search for intitle:google and it will return the same results.

The problem is, Yahoo News has a intitle operator bug that seems to be returning zero results for the command.

Yahoo News Headline Search Issue

The operator works nicely at Google News.

Yahoo! Announces Widget Badges

You may have already noticed some improvements in the Yahoo! Widget Gallery with the release of Yahoo! Widgets 4. Instead of those plain old download links, each Widget now has what we call an in-page installer. There’s a button for each Widget that just works, no matter what components a given user require.

Here are some sample badges:

Yahoo! Purchases Zimbra Email Service for $350 Million

Yesterday, word spread that Yahoo has brokered a deal with email service Zimbra and will be purchasing it for $350 million.

WebmasterWorld members wonder if Yahoo is really pressured to buy all companies. They're wondering if Yahoo is trying to do better. My guess is that yes, they are.

Bill Slawski sings a different tune on Cre8asite Forums. He's actually liking the combination of multiple Yahoo properties.

You know, between that and yesterday's Beta launch of Yahoo Mash, I think Yahoo is moving in the right direction. Now if Mash can replace 360, and incorporate Groups into it (and maybe some of those Zimbra) features, things could get interesting.

But Joe Dolson would love Yahoo to collapse the services and mesh every acquisition into one solid product.

And of course, some people are afraid of the Zimbra acqusition because they're not interested in sharing their email addresses with other companies. Then again, everyone has a Gmail or Yahoo Mail email address nowadays, so I'm not sure that's a tremendous concern.

Overall, the acquisition seems to have mixed reactions, not so much regarding Zimbra but because they're afraid that the Yahoo ship will sink. Like Bill, I'm going to hold my chin up and hope for the best.

Yahoo! Acquires BlueLithium, a Behavioral Ad Firm

Yesterday, Yahoo announced that it had purchased BlueLithium, a behavioral-targeting ad network, for $300 million.

What is BlueLithium, you ask?

BlueLithium is a three-year-old company whose technology tracks consumer behavior as users move from site to site, allowing businesses to deliver more relevant ads. A consumer shopping for environmentally friendly products might see ads for hybrid cars a week later.

At WebmasterWorld, forum members discuss the acquisition and see that Yahoo is moving ahead of Google in the area of behavioral ad-targeting. In fact, Google is not enthusiastic about the idea at all.

Some thoughts as presented by forum members say that YPN will improve with this acquisition:

This is something that could help Yahoo in many ways. Not only will it help them better target their existing ads, but will help bring the ads worldwide and give them another dimension to both YPN and its advertising program.

Others feel that Yahoo! will come out with a much better analytics package:

It also sounds like Yahoo is interested in providing advertisers with the analytics side of the equation above and beyond simple conversion tracking (maybe kind of like Google Analytics on steroids?)

All in all, forum members agree that this is a great move for Yahoo and are excited to see how it will benefit the company. Congratulations, Yahoo, on the acquisition.

Google's (GOOG) Earnings Impress While Yahoo (YHOO) Gears Up For Q2 Earnings

A WebmasterWorld and DigitalPoint Forums thread mentions that the Google (GOOG) is performing very well in the stock market, with a net profit of 69%.

What is the secret to Google's financial success? Advertisements. From the DigitalPoint forums discussion:

yup, making profit on both advertisers and publishers. smart price the publishers and decrease the quality score of the advertisers, thus charging more and more for keywords. it's a no lose situation for them as long as they control both ends of the equation. no wonder they are making money hand over fist...

On Search Engine Land, Barry refers to additional articles related to Google's Q1 earnings, including the financial tables.

Meanwhile, Yahoo (YHOO) has performed dismally in Q1 with a 11% decrease in earnings, despite its release of Panama. A WebmasterWorld thread has more:

The drumbeat over Panama raised expectations

Barry weighs in on the financials of Yahoo as well in Search Engine Land. One of the articles he references is that Yahoo is evaluating whether Terry Semel, Yahoo's current CEO, is truly the man for the job.

Yahoo Promotes Lawyer to "Click Fraud Czar"

Search Engine Land reports that Yahoo has appointed Reggie Davis as "Vice President of Marketplace Quality" to address concerns regarding invalid and fraudulent clicks. Barry adds over at Search Engine Land that 12 to 15% of search ad clicks are discounted.

WebmasterWorld has forum discussion from the SEM community which overall is supportive of this move. The discussion is revolving around whether Reggie Davis is tech-savvy or if he is a great lawyer. Being both couldn't hurt either.

As one member states:

If I were an advertiser, I'd feel more comfortable if the click fraud czar was a top notch techie to protect my interests.

If I were a Yahoo! shareholder, I'd feel more comfortable if the click fraud czar was a top notch lawyer to protect my interests.

Another member has similar sentiment:

The real challenge is to detect a fraudulent click technically speaking.

But hey, if you're happy with a lawyer doing this job, good for you and good for Yahoo.

Yahoo! Top Searches: A Reality of Disappointment?

Early this year, Yahoo! released their Top Search Terms of 2006. Here they are:

1 Britney Spears
2 WWE
3 Shakira
4 Jessica Simpson
5 Paris Hilton
6 American Idol
7 Beyonce Knowles
8 Chris Brown
9 Pamela Anderson
10 Lindsay Lohan

I'll keep my thoughts out of this and just quote the WebmasterWorld thread;

What a sad testament to society. Those top searches are just depressing. Doesn't anybody care about anything outside of entertainment anymore?
The stats just show how obsessed some people are with celebrities. Britney didn't even release a record this year.

But this quote was funny, related to AOL's mishap.

They should have given us the data in a zip file, sorted by userid ;)

Yahoo! To Reorganize; Where Is Search In Yahoo!'s Future?

Last night, the news broke after many rumors about Yahoo!'s CEO possibly leaving, that COO, Rosenweig is resigning (not the CEO) and that Yahoo! is going to "reorganize." Danny posted the news at Search Engine Land with the press release, here is a snippet of that.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec 05, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today announced a reorganization of its structure and management to align its operations with its key customer segments -- audiences, advertisers and publishers -- and more effectively leverage Yahoo!'s significant strengths to capture future opportunities for growth.

I guess that internal memo about peanut butter was a hint to what is to come.

But where does search fit into "audiences, advertisers and publishers?" That is the question, Google's Matt Cutts is asking at his blog.

Dude, that was all one sentence. Sounds like Lloyd Braun and Dan Rosensweig will be leaving, and Yahoo will form three main groups: audience, advertiser/publisher, and technology. I’m not sure whether search would fall under the audience group or the technology group.

Of course Yahoo! can easily drop search into pretty much any or all of those buckets, "audiences, advertisers and publishers," if they wanted to. But I think this release and change at Yahoo! warrants a blog post over at the YSearchBlog, don't you? :)

Yahoo! Deals With Newspapers

Monday, I reported at the Search Engine Watch Blog that Yahoo Strikes Deal With 176 Newspapers, a great deal for Yahoo! to promote the HotJob service and obviously for branding purposes.

The New York Times reports that Yahoo has struck a deal with 176 newspapers, consisting of a 7 newspaper chains to "share content, advertising and technology." The first part of the deal will promote Yahoo's HotJobs site, where newspapers will post the local jobs to HotJobs and use HotJobs's technology on their local newspaper site for classifieds listings. Then Yahoo wants to make these newspapers content more accessible within Yahoo's search index, local news and other search services.

This topic is currently being discussed at WebmasterWorld where members find this deal to be a good one for Yahoo!. Robert Charlton believes this deal is a "major development for Yahoo Local."

Yahoo! Creates Buzz Over Rumors of Cutbacks & "Peanut Butter"

An internal memo reportedly from Yahoo!'s Senior VP, Brad Garlinghouse was posted at the WSJ and at Kedrosky that he thinks Yahoo! needs to cut back by 15 to 20%. In short, Yahoo! has invested in everything and anything and has too much of the same thing making it confusing, redundant and overly costly. They lack a focus, "clarity of ownership and accountability", "decisiveness," and "vision." The peanut butter thing has to do with, "Yahoo is spreading its resources too thinly, like peanut butter on a slice of bread."

Yahoo!'s Publisher Spotlight Site Switched Back to Google AdSense

Back in late April, the Yahoo! Publisher Network blog featured a site named TopSpeed.com as sporting the YPN ads on their site.

TopSpeed.com is to car crazies is what HoopsVibe.com is to basketball fans–a space where enthusiasts can read about racing, argue over cars, play driving games, examine auto specs, view videos of car crashes (may favorite page, I have to admit) and more, all in a media- and interaction-rich environment.

But now, if you visit TopSpeed.com you will notice that they have Google AdSense ads live currently. So they must of switched back from Google to Yahoo! and then back from Yahoo! to Google.

Yahoo! Buys Two Companies To Improve Search Marketing Product?

I just posted at the SEW Blog that Yahoo Acquires AdInterax Rich Media Advertising Company;

Yahoo announced that they have purchased AdInterax, a company that specializes in management of video and animated online ads. AdInterax built tools to float animations, dynamically expandable banners and streaming video ads. Also, Yahoo bought Rich Media today, an online advertising company.

Both acquisitions seem to be to be an effort to expand the Yahoo! Search Marketing product to support video and rich media ads plus add more ad volume.

It appears from a WebmasterWorld thread that advertisers are upset with the investment saying;

Yahoo should invest in getting Project Panama ready. Heck, they can't even deliver text ads very well at the moment. Their matching algo is terrible, it really makes you realise how well Google performs.

Yahoo!'s stock is a bit down today again after the news.

Yahoo! Settles Click Fraud Suit

Chris Sherman has the huge write up on Yahoo's settlement of the click fraud case. He describes;

The terms of the settlement include a cash payment of $4.95 million to plaintiffs' counsel and a provision that will allow advertisers to file a claim for Yahoo to investigate potentially fraudulent clicks back through January 2004. Yahoo will pay refunds to advertisers who file claims if it discovers evidence of fraudulent clicks.

Chris explains that the amount does not come close to the $90M Google Settlement but Yahoo is "offering cash refunds, and there is no ceiling on the amount it will refund if it finds evidence of click fraud," where Google offers advertiser credits.

Yahoo! & eBay In Strategic Partnership with Ads & PayPal

I just posted over at SEW Blog that eBay & Yahoo Partner On Graphical Ads, Other Areas. This is what I wrote;

Everyone is talking about the eBay & Yahoo partnership, where Yahoo will be eBay's exclusive provider of graphical ads and Yahoo will promote eBay's PayPal to its merchants and publishers. Reports via the Washington Post, The Street and BusinessWeek.com stress how this poses a threat to Google and Microsoft. It is important to note that this partnership is primarily to provide graphical ads and click-to-call ads and on a lesser standpoint to provide some search ads. The limited search ads are probably because eBay does not want to detract visitors from the eBay products and auctions, which is logical.

Not really too much to add to it then that. Some folks in the forums show this is having an affect on Google's stock price right now. Long term, who knows.

Yahoo! to Release New Ad System Today

Friday we reported that there were More Signs of Yahoo! Switching PPC Program to CTR Based Rankings but we are still unsure of this. Today, reuters and BBC News reports that Yahoo! is releasing the new ad system some time today.

Yahoo's new software system aims to let advertisers target potential customers more accurately based upon the words users type into the search box.

and...

The system is a software-based marketing console to help corporate advertisers and advertising agency buyers understand how to target relevant advertising to Web users based on the keyword search terms consumers use to find information on Web sites.

Advertisers can instantly calculate the cost of acquiring new customers using Yahoo's data and analytic system. Buyers can also test for the most effective ads and make rapid changes.

I should know more details, later this afternoon. I am continuously being told that the facts of my previous "rumor" post is wrong. So we will see.

Class Action Law Suit Against Yahoo! for Click Fraud & Spyware

WebmasterWorld has a thread named Class Action Suit Filed Against YSM which discusses a Washington Post report that Yahoo is being sued for "syndication fraud." Syndication partners are those who place Yahoo! ads on their Web sites and products. Most of the law suit is based on Ben Edelman's uncovering of PPC Ads Found In Spyware With Auto Click Fraud.

A class-action lawsuit filed Monday against Yahoo! Inc. and group of unnamed third-parties accuses the company of engaging in "syndication fraud" against advertisers who pay Yahoo to display their ads on search results and on the Web pages of partner Web sites. The suit claims that Yahoo displayed these advertisers' online ads via spyware and adware products and on so-called "typosquatter" Web sites that capitalize on misspellings of popular trademarks or company names.

Potentially more explosive is the plaintiff's claim that Yahoo regularly uses its relationship with adware and typosquatting sites to gin up extra revenue around earnings time, alleging that the company is conspiring to boost revenue by partnering with some of the Internet's seamier characters. From the lawsuit:

The article also mentions typo-squatting issues where people go to a Web address, that is a typo of the Web address they really want to go to. They see ads on the site and click on them. This is a big business and has always rubbed people the wrong way. For some reason, Google's Domain Park, just now is getting a lot of attention. We wrote about it back in early January under the title DomainPark - AdSense for Domains Sparks Huge Forum Debate.

Bottom line with this law suit, probably like with Google, Yahoo! will settle out of court for a relatively small sum. Who will win here? The lawyers.

they don`t want to set expectations to high, that way they can`t fail! it is a win-win situation.

Andrei Broder, former vice president of research at AltaVista and until recently Distinguished Engineer & CTO, IBM Research, is joining Yahoo as research fellow and vice president of emerging search technology at Yahoo Research.

Bill Slawski at the Cre8asite thread, Andrei Broder Joins Yahoo! says that there "are a lot of search patents and white papers with Andrei Broder's name upon them. He has written papers and patents in collaboration with some search engineers presently working with Google and Yahoo!, including Monika Henzinger and Krishna Bharat of Google."

Yahoo! Prank on Google or Bad Data?

Yesterday, Yahoo! improved its Maps product. Matt Cutts, the face behind Google's spam fight discovered and posted an entry named More Yahoo strangeness, where he notes that if you type in Google headquarters address, up comes The Dude's Fish Store, weird - yes. Steve is the first to comment at Matt's blog saying, "Something fishy going on here!!" cute. :)

There is a DigitalPoint Forum thread on the topic.

Yahoo! Maps More...

News come way of the Yahoo! Search Blog that Yahoo! Maps addsdrag 'em, search 'em, hack 'em. So its more interactive, with drag and drop features (like Google Maps). Yahoo! also added multi-point driving directions, deeper Integrated Yahoo! Local, and a new usability component - new overview map. Plus a ton of new small features and enhanced developer support with APIs and Ajax support. Jeremy Zawodny has more on the developer side and Chris Sherman has a nice wrap up article on the release.

I started a complimentary thread at Search Engine Watch Forums.

Yahoo & Google Keep Hiring

Looking for smart, talented and creative people at all times. They just keep hiring and finding ways to find the best out there. But don't forget the PPC ad for I am scary smart at Google, which coincides a NY Times ad.

Blog Search Results Embedded in Yahoo! News

Search Engine Watch has the ultimate coverage on this, both Danny, Chris and Gary all have blog entries on the way Yahoo! integrated blog results within the news search engine.

Chris Sherman writes Yahoo Integrates News, Blogs & Flickr Search Results

Danny Sullivan writes Thoughts On & Playing With Yahoo's Blog Search.

Gary Price writes Yahoo Should Let News Search Users Know What a Blog Is; Search Only Blogs From Yahoo News/Blog Integration.

Basically, if you do a news search, for example, on wedding via ask jeeves, on the right hand side, you will find "BLOGS BETA", with blog results followed by a link to More Blog results...

It looks a like the following, but Gary doesn't like the fact they name it blog, and leave it at that. Many news readers might not know what blog means.

Yahoo! to Publish Copyrighted Books in Open Source Digital Library

Google is trying it but many are against it some even willing to go to court to prevent it. But Yahoo! just announced the Open Content Alliance.

The Open Content Alliance (OCA) represents the collaborative efforts of a group of cultural, technology, nonprofit, and governmental organizations from around the world that will help build a permanent archive of multilingual digitized text and multimedia content. Content in the OCA archive will be accessible soon through this website and through Yahoo!

Yahoo! Instant Search

It's Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" for the year 2005. You type in a search phrase into http://instant.search.yahoo.com/ and watch this contextual bubble overlay the bottom portion of the page, within that contextual bubble you find the number one result for your query (sometimes). Here is an example of the number one result for the search phrase, "search engine", at Yahoo!.

Yahoo! to Get Y.com Soon

A recently featured Search Engine Watch Forums thread named Yahoo Moves To Trademark Y.com shows hows Yahoo! will be gaining rights to Y.com soon. Msgraph, wrote in the thread;

1.) Some miraculous deal was reached because Yahoo was able to pulls some strings and will therefore be given Y.com in the near future. 2.) Yahoo is just covering some extra bases to prevent anyone else from attempting to trademark Y.com. Simply because they have Y! trademarked, and since IANA may never release Y.com or any other single-character domains, Yahoo is just going to take their chance on trademarking it. Or if IANA ever releases these domains, Yahoo may attempt to stake their claim on Y.com through the trademark.

Filing Application Information:

Words Only: Y.COM

Filing Date August 22, 2005

(APPLICANT) Yahoo! Inc. CORPORATION DELAWARE 701 First Avenue Sunnyvale CALIFORNIA 94089

If that isnt enough, on August 25, 2005 Yahoo! also put in a request for the trademark of an oval near an exclamation point [oval!.gif], via SEW Blog.

Yahoo! Local Freshly Updated

Yahoo! released its updated user interface and and feature set for Yahoo! Local. John Battelle has a very nice write up on it with inside information from Paul Levine, head of Yahoo Local Search. Danny Sullivan gives a write up of feature sets. Let's not forget to add Jeff Weiner's thoughts on local search and the changing face of media.

Forum discussion on this topic at WebmasterWorld.

Update: Moderator, Chicago's thoughts on this new Yahoo! Local:

- A deeper more broad definition of "local search"
- Fostering a sense of community
- Movement from business lookup to an augmentation of local behavior patterns
- The realization that local search includes events, activities, and other time-based local actions
- Personalization and leveraging user data
- Deeper content integration from disparate local based content within the Y network in a local destination
- Drill down: From city to neighborhood
- Freshness
- Destination: City portal characteristics
- Further emphasis on user generated content
- One step closer to the integration of social networking

Yahoo Shopping API Released

Yahoo! is really rolling out API / XML tools to help the developer community build useful Web resources for their Web visitors. Yesterday, they released the Yahoo! Shopping Web Services which enables one to build "applications that provide comparison shopping and product search functionality." They give you three ways to get at the data (1) search by product, (2) search by category and (3) search by merchant.

Forget simply about comparison search...Think about using pricing data, in real time, to be competitive. Competitor A decreases price of product Y by $1 under yours. You can then dynamically change your pricing to $1 under them. Obviously, one would need to make sure there is a minimum profit margin left, but that is an easy algorithm to build.

Yahoo Publisher Network For Bloggers Going Live Tommorrow

For the last several months Yahoo has been working hard to prepare for the release of its new publisher network that will release tommorrow for bloggers and small publishing networks. A "source of a source" has informed me that Yahoo will be releasing its Publisher Network tommorrow and will include an array of different features that sets itself apart from Google's service, namely strange odd looking unrelated ads (see top of website) and editorial review for selection of ads on content pages. This could mean good things for publishers that decide to use Yahoo's new service.

Some of the main differences between the Google product and what Yahoo is offering is that Yahoo is actively going after the growing online medium of blogs. Of which Search Engine Roundtable is a perfect example (see ads at top of website). Yahoo is looking to possibly challenge Google's pricing power as well by spliting the fees from clicks generated on ads from a website. They are also boosting editorial review and placement of relevant ads on publishing sites. Where as Google relies on technology to do the job. Will it be enough to make bloggers switch?

The news that Yahoo! purchased Konfabulator (spiffy new homepage), rolled through some of the SEO Forums. I had used Konfabulator in the past, before upgrading to Apple Tiger, which came with Dashboard - that alone is a big Apple scandal.

I rarely use either Konfabulator or Dashboard these days. I am not sure why Yahoo! bought them. I assume it has to do with the Yahoo! Life Engine concept... Anyway, forum discussion at:

Yahoo! Caught Cloaking

Mikkel deMib Svendsen, SEW Mod - SES Speaker - SEM Industry Leader, created a thread yesterday named Is Yahoo cloaking Yahoo?

Mikkel points to this cached page of www.maddhattentertainment.com/jbm/index.pl/schiavo-garden-blog-blog.html. Mikkel asks;

What is the relationship between the site above, JustBlogMe.com and Blo.gs - they seem it all be part of some kind of interlinking, redirecting scam project. I haven't spend much time on it yet, but I just wanted to throw it out to all of you. It just dosn't look "clean"

blo.gs say on the website that it has been purchased by Yahoo. maddhattentertainment.com on the other side dosn't say anything about Yahoo (and it does look abit on the "adult" side ...). But if you go to for example: maddhattentertainment.com/jbm/index.pl/schiavo-garden-blog-blog.html (found in the Yahoo index) you are redirected to justblogme.com - allthought the title in Yahoo says blo.gs

SEOmike replies that a company like Yahoo! should know how to cloak without getting easily caught. He offers, "Yahoo next time please give me a call and consult with me before your next cloak, I'll be glad to make it completely undetectable."

Mikkel further explains that its not the point that they are doing some form of cloaking but rather that;

My only point is just that is amazing how little many of the people INSIDE the engines that are responsible for publishing content knows about their own webmaster guidelines and it makes it very dificult for the rest of us to even consider taking those guidelines serious when they prove again and again that they don't really care - or, are able to live up to it even within their own crew.

It is so true, especially with a company the size of Yahoo! They have many divisions, one division is the search division. They don't always communicate and rarely understand the details of each division. So it is Tim Mayer's responsibility to get to the bottom of this, which he will - "We will look into it and make sure the issue is resolved to abide by our content guidelines," Tim says.

Y!Q Challenge: Not the Official Beta Launch

I was reading a thread at WebmasterWorld named Received email from Yahoo!: Y!Q Challenge, which started off reading; "YPN is finally here. Well it is Y!Q and it is in Beta but I'm excited!"

As the thread went on, it seems like there is great confusion about this product.

(1) This is not new. It was launched back in early February, and here is the YSearchBlog entry.

(2) This product, Y!Q, is not YPN (Yahoo Publishers Network). I made sure to clarify this with Yahoo! and they told me that Y!Q is one of their publisher offerings but at the same time Yahoo is working on other publisher products as well, something like an AdSense competitor.

All the email announced was a program named Y!Q Challenge, which was posted at the YSearchBlog on Friday. So its really no big deal, basically you can win $5,000 but that is it. :)

Everyone knows that Yahoo! has those tools to create quick, simply brochure-wear Web sites. Yahoo! figured that it would make logical sense to promote its Yahoo! Statement Released on Yahoo! Limit Access to PPC API

Over the past two weeks I reported on Yahoo! Limiting Access to PPC API. Some advertisers were upset that they were rejected from using the API. There was confusion as to if Overture/Yahoo was restricting access to only certain groups or not. Today I received word from an official "Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture) spokesperson" that read:

- Yahoo! Search Marketing's (Overture) position on APIs and open access has not changed. We support all advertisers, SEMs and agencies that desire to have direct access through APIs, and continue to expand the numbers of companies participating in our program.
- In addition, we've been working proactively with web analytics companies to determine how they would like to add value to their customers' campaign tracking needs, how we can expand our API program to help them achieve that, and how that can extend the value of advertising on Yahoo! and the Overture network. This does not represent a change in policy for Overture / Yahoo!

As you can see, it was worded very carefully.

Yahoo! Creative Commons Search

Last week, Yahoo! launched Creative Commons Search.

This Yahoo! Search service finds content across the Web that has a Creative Commons license. While most stuff you find on the web has a full copyright, this search helps you find content published by authors that want you to share or reuse it, under certain conditions. Learn more...

What is interesting is that Yahoo CC Search is #3 on DayPop 40 as Nancy Evars blogs but yet, forum chatter (on my meter) is very low. WebmasterWorld has a thread started by Brett on the 24th, no replies.

My Yahoo! Mobile: It's a Big Thing

Yesterday Yahoo! announced at the Yahoo! Search blog that they released My Yahoo! Mobile RSS. For some reason, I have not yet found any forum threads on it, not even at WebmasterWorld. In my opinion, this is a big deal and forums should be discussing it. Many of the top executives believe that mobile is the future of search and computing. I believe Bloglines has a mobile option. I can easily see myself getting more accustomed to the mobile Web. A friend of mine was in a cell phone store and the people behind the counter were all giddy about this new phone that came in. It was the first GPS enabled phone for a certain provider. He told me that they were discussing how this is the future of the wireless industry. I replied to him, that this is the future to how we live our lives.

Yahoo! Adds News, Stocks, Mail & Ads to Search Home Page

This morning, it looks like Yahoo! updated the Yahoo! Search home page; adding news items, stock information, mail notification, and even a small text advertisement at the top. I hear that they did this in order to differentiate themselves from the competitors; i.e. Google and MSN. The text ad at the top, seems a bit shady from a search engines perspective, wonder how much it costs to buy a static link? :)

Here is the portion they added under the search box. It seems useful. I like it.
Currently, My Yahoo! is my home page, otherwise, I can see myself switching to Yahoo! Search simply for this change. Seriously, I am interested in checking out the latest news before I do a search.

yahoo-search-news-index.gif

Next you will see a screen capture of the small text ad at the top right portion of the Yahoo! Search index page. It caught my eye, so a subtle, small, little ad can work. Its the opposite of an 'in your face' ad, maybe that can be a new strategy. Tiny little ads, that are barely visible. :)

Reaction to Wide Search Engine Acceptance for the Nofollow Attribute For Links

Yesterday we found out the nofollow attribute was coming to a search engine near you. Google, Yahoo, and MSN all announced this news yesterday at their respective blogs. I assume if Ask Jeeves had a blog, they would have been part of this announcement. Major blog development supporters include SixPart - MovableType, LiveJournal, Google's Blogger, WordPress, Flickr, Buzznet, Blojsom, Blosxom, and MSN Spaces.

Danny Sullivan has an excellent write up on what this is all about at his entry named Google, Yahoo, MSN Unite On Support For Nofollow Attribute For Links. Personally, I think I might add the tag to the comments here. But I am not yet sure. Since adding the image security code, I have had two comments that were spam. So I am thinking about just opening it up and linking directly. Why? Because people who comment here are on topic to the entries and provide insight. This tag is to prevent comment link spam, or any link spam - if you do not have a link spam problem, then you should be fine. I think this should be a default option in all blog software, all guest books and some forums - because many people just let their sites go to hell. It is an excellent way to prevent linkage spam in that case.

I know we are discussing implementing such a tag at SEW forums. But the question is where should it be implemented. So what about the SEO forums, what are they thinking?

Yahoo! Party at the Palm's Club Rain - WMW Conf 7

I just got back from the Yahoo! Search party that took place at the Palms Hotel & Casino's Rain Nightclub. By the way, it was not easy to find the hotel's Web site, I had to search several times - the search phrase that worked well in Google was palm hotel and casino as opposed to palm vegas or others like that. Anyway, back to the party...

WebmasterRadio.FM co-something the event, when I got there they were discussing the shows they have planned. They even announced that in early 2005, Tim Mayer and Jeremy Zawodny will be guests on the show. Seems like this will be a very interesting and educational talk show, so check it out.

The club was interesting, I did not bring a camera, but I am sure you will be able to find pictures from your buddies. I believe Jeremy Zawodny will be posting pictures at his blog entry named Come to the Yahoo Party at Webmaster World, where he invites his Apache Con friends. In fact, before the conference, Jeremy presented at the Community Building, Blogs and Forums session where he talked about a review he posted at his blog on the Motorola Bluetooth phone, which I happened to have purchased just about a week ago. So I spoked to him about some of the integration issues/solutions (if any) between my car, my mac and the 5% bluetooth phone.

Back to the party...

Tim Mayer came over to me, when I was sitting on some sofa, kind of off in the corner. I asked him he they (Yahoo!) hires top notch spammers in an effort to combat spam. You know, like how governments and large companies hire hackers to prevent being hacked. Tim said they have not, they just hire 'engineers'. Which got me thinking, what if the Yahoo! people decided to pass some special gas through the air at this party. The gas contained a drug that turned spammers into the extreme opposite of a spammer (just a note to readers, I am not using the word 'spammer' in a derogatory fashion). I told Tim, that if they had this solution, it might solve a huge chunk of the spam issues they have overnight. Of course I was joking, everyone at the party were clean, white hats.

yahoo-party-rain-palm.jpg

After that I decided to walk around a bit to 'mingle'. But due to this bad head cold and the very loud bass vibrations coming from the speakers, I just had to leave. Wish I was feeling better, but what can I do. Overall the party looked to be very fun, people were having a blast, everyone was play gambling and the SEOs were chatting away.

Yahoo! - Great Party!

Informal Discussion with Tim Mayer and the Yahoo! Search Folks

I had the opportunity to speak with Tim Mayer, Aaron Ferstman and Nancy Evars from Yahoo! Search after the last session of the day. Let me take you through the conversation in chronological order, as best as I remember it.

After the "Search Engine Friendly Design and Coding (Especially Flash)", which Tim spoke at, I met up with Aaron at the speakers platform. Aaron was waiting for Tim to finish answering individual attendee questions. Aaron and I discussed the normal stuff you discuss with people when you first meet them. We discussed the fact that people in California like to buy big 4 wheel drive SUVs and how people in New York like to buy small fast cars. I myself just leased the Lexus SC430 (sporty convertible), and as you know, it does not drive well in the snow - you also probably know that New York tends to get its share of snow. We just found it funny that people in Cali like cars that are more suited to New Yorkers and New Yorkers like cars that are more suited for Californians.

After the car talk, we discussed what it takes to speak at these conferences, especially as a representative from the search engines. I commented that Tim does an excellent job. We agreed that these speakers need to be politicians. Soon after, Tim was ready for a cigarette so he pushed his way (being dramatic - he did not push anyone) out the conference room out onto the street where he can get a breath of fresh air (or cigarette). There Tim, Aaron and Nancy sat to talk about various topics.

We discussed the Yahoo! Search Blog, which Nancy works on and the conversations ultimately lead to Jeremy Zawodny, who will be arriving tomorrow, and his blog. Jeremy is known to say things in his personal blog which ruffel the feathers of some of the more corporate types over at Yahoo!, but overall it seems to me that most of the people over at Yahoo! are fairly relaxed. After meeting Tim, I get that impression.

The blog conversation moves on to, of course, to comment spam. Yahoo! Search Blog, as you know, allows for commenting - as opposed to Google's blog. Jeremy has a lot of experience with blogging and he uses MT Blacklist to fight comment spam on his blog as well as the Yahoo! Search Blog. Tim made a comment that he was at some bar with the WMW crew and one mentioned that they tried to comment spam Jeremy's blog. Of course Jeremy blocked the comment spammer from doing so in the future. But another WMW folk said that if he was spamming blogs, he would make sure not to spam a Yahoo! employee's blog.

We then discussed ThreadWatch.org, NickW's blog, Tim loves reading it. Tim finds ThreadWatch to be more of a forum then a blog, I see his point - but I disagree. We discussed giving ThreadWatch.org a link on the left hand navigation of the Yahoo Search Blog site. I think it might happen in the near future. From ThreadWatch we moved onto forums. We discussed some of the exciting threads, such as the one about how people post spammers in order to show Yahoo! and Google who the spammers are. Tim kind of hinted that he wouldn't do anything manually when he finds such a thread. Of course he could not comment on Google's behalf.

I then asked Tim about all the PM's he gets or Sticky Mails (as they are referred to at WMW). He says he gets some of the funniest things. One story he told me was about this Sticky he got from someone who basically copied content off another site and complained that his site was not listed. After Tim responded to the member who sent him the sticky mail, the member responded that he was a cab driver and he should give him a break. Of course, Tim knew that this person was not a cab driver - so he found the whole situation funny.

That conversation lead to how Yahoo! handles the re-inclusion of pages that were delisted. He said that you can email an address and Yahoo! should review it within 2 weeks or so. He gave me specific examples of such cases, but no need to mention them here. At first, he explained, Yahoo! was bombarded with requests for re-inclusion (this occurred after Yahoo! merged all the other engines into one). But now, a re-inclusion request should be reviewed quickly.

Then the Yahoo folks split up and I walked with Tim back to the Hilton. During the walk, we talked more about giving NickW that link on the Yahoo Search Blog and some football talk. Tim is a Steelers fan, I myself am a Jet fan (yes I know). We talked a bit about how we used to run rotisseries before it was all automated on the Web. He used to fax back and forth sheets between people. I actually had my brother write small programs to help keep track of the stuff.

As we approached the Hilton, we talked about how Yahoo's Blog links to Google's blog and how MSN's blog links to both Yahoo's Blog and MSN's Blog. But you do not see Google linking to either Yahoo or MSN. :) Which lead us to talk about those Google bombs, and the recent "more evil than Satan", when queried at MSN Search Beta brought up Google. Of course the engines play games with each other, and he shared some funny stories with me on that. At that point we exchanged cards and parted ways.

It was nice meeting the folks at Yahoo. Nancy was nice to talk to, real smart and fun. Aaron is an all around nice guy, seems very hard working and honest. Tim has way too much fun over at Yahoo!, seems way to laid back and, to be serious, is an excellent communicator.

Yahoo! Search Goes Wireless

Yahoo! Mobile, released just recently, will allow you to search Yahoo! Search while on the road. A post by Nacho at SEW forums said;

I liked how they display both Sponsored Results and Web Matches. The two right navigation ads appear first then the central highlighted ones second. Organic or natural listings are limited to 10 results -- nice and clean. Then another 2 (the first 2 on the right) sponsored ads reappear.

It gives you the ability to move to Images, Directory, Local, News and Products as well. They have enabled shortcuts and advanced search. The "Also try:" function had the words overlapping one another.

Google recently released Google SMS (Short Message Service) and has a Wireless Google User Guide. Mobile search undoubtedly be huge.

Jeremy Zawodny Moves Back to the Yahoo! Search Team

Jeremy announced that he will be moving over to the search team at Yahoo!. I have been looking for clues in how Yahoo! will utilize RSS technology in order to build a break through technology to take search to the next level. Those who read Jeremy's blog know that he knows a lot of things, two of those things include search and RSS.

RSS is something Yahoo! is pursuing big time, the question is, how will they use it to revolutionize the search industry. I have so many ideas going through my head, I just wish I had more clues. I posted a thread about this at Search Engine Watch Forums.

Update: Also see Danny's blog post named Jeremy Zawodny: Yahoo Search Blogvangelist.

New Design for My Yahoo Adds Screen Real Estate

Yahoo is now allowing My Yahoo users to test out the new My Yahoo layout. Yahoo! lists the new features to be found at the new My Yahoo here. Jeremy Zawodny has some great information on this in his entry named New My Yahoo Beta, Featuring RSS and Atom. Anyway, I was smart enough to compare the old with the new before switching directly to the new design. Here are my first impressions of the new my yahoo design.

(1) Much more screen real estate. I was able to see two more RSS feeds I subscribed to with the new design. Reduces all the scrolling I do daily, I subscribe to tons of RSS feeds, so it helps.

(2) Search at the top but more features. Instead of a simple, Yahoo! Search box, there is the full Yahoo Search box that allows you to search Web, Images, Yellow Pages, News, and Products.

(3) Compact Design; this adds more room for more stock quotes - which I faded out from you below. More, more content. Good stuff.

I did not get into all the features yet, but it looks like a nice improvement so far.

Below are two screen shots of the My Yahoo pages, old and new.

Yahoo Search Blog on a Roll

Might be too early for me to mention this but it seems like the Yahoo! Search bloggers at The Yahoo! Search Blog are on a roll. They have published an entry each work day this week, Monday was Labor day. Not bad compared to their search blog rivals over at the Google Blog.

Good work Yahoo Search! SEOs love frequent updates. :)

Trendy Political Daughters

This comes from the new Yahoo Blog. Thought it was kinda interesting to see the spike in popularity the media has caused for the daughters of the Bush and Kerry. The Bush daughters are a bit infamous from their college days around the part of Texas I live in, and now they are in search too! Jenna seems to be leading the squad followed closely by Alexandra. I do have to say Erik Gunther at Yahoo does have a pretty cool job watching the trends in search on a daily basis. The trends seem to be predictable in some aspects, some not, so every day the data is never the same, and neither is the job.

Yahoo! Announces Official Yahoo Search Blog

Yahoo announced today a new blog for their Yahoo! Search division. The blog can be found at http://www.ysearchblog.com/. Currently they are accepting comments and trackbacks at the first entry by Jeff Weiner named The Engine of Possibility. Jeremy Zawodny was instrumental in helping his company launch this blog. Of course they are using the MovableType "publishing platform", smart move - in my opinion. Unlike the the Offical Google Blog, Yahoo actually has links to "Industry Sources" such as Search Engine Watch, WebmasterWorld, many other news resources and blogs (including this one).

Yahoo's Anti-Spy Toolbar Problems

I am still getting out of the SES conference mode. Tomorrow, I will get back to the SEM forum coverage. Just one news item that caught my eye, in light of this past week. Yahoo's, this week, has repeatedly talked about how its anti-spy toolbar was one of his latest and greatest applications. Even at the "executive roundtable" session, when asked about the top features released by their engines, the Yahoo! rep brought up the toolbar.

Now, I see an article at C|Net named Yahoo's Anti-Spy toolbar feature buggy. What a shame, and I quote, "Yahoo on Friday confirmed that its recently released toolbar has mistakenly linked an alleged spyware program with a product that has nothing to do with the application in question."

Yahoo Mocks the Google Dance 2004

For those who went or read about the Google Dance 2004 you would have noticed they ran out of beer early within the party. What is really funny is that Yahoo! did something to mock that at their search engine. Conduct a search at Yahoo on the keyword phrase ses party rule #1 and you will find the following results:

How funny, can you imagine - having a search battle like this? Musician's did it in their songs, why not search engines through search?

Major Search Engine Virus - Google & Yahoo Affected

This was first reported to me by one of the major forum owners. He told me that it seemed that Google was sending him 3 - 4 times the amount of traffic then what was of the norm. Later on he found the source was a virus:

The latest version of MyDoom, which started arriving in peoples mail boxes in force today, uses search eninges to find more recipients for its message.

Once the virus is started, it searched the users files for domain names. Once it spotted a domain name (e.g. '@example.com', or in '(Link: (Link: www.example.com')www.example.com')(Link: www.example.com')www.example.com'), it will search various search engines for valid e-mail addresses within these domains. These search engines include Lycos, Google, Altavista, Yahoo and possibly others. Some of the search strings used:

GET /default.asp?lpv=1&loc=searchhp&tab=web&query=e-mail+example.com

Some search engines report performance issues.

Antivirus vendors are currently publishing updated signature files. Please update ASAP. Infected machines can be identified by looking for excessive traffic to search engines and smtp traffic.

Search engines, such as Google, were reported to have been down. Articles by ZDNet were posted, Andy Beal posted a screen shot, and the folks over at SlashDot are discussing.

Yahoo_Mike Says Forrester Concludes Yahoo! Search is Superior to Google

In a thread at WebmasterWorld created by an official Yahoo! representative named Yahoo_Mike, he says:

I’m not certain if folks here have seen Forrester’s recent Consumer Technographics Survey, but it cites some interesting stats on Yahoo! vs. Google search. According to the survey, Yahoo! Search and Google are at a draw – personalization, presentation and quality of service are considered the big differentiators now, with the nod ultimately going to Yahoo! Search. PC World cites the survey’s findings. While this is great validation, I think we also recognize the fact that we still have a lot to accomplish and we’re working really hard to make improvements to our services and more important, address the issues and concerns identified on this forum and others. Much more to come in the weeks and months ahead.

Surprised? So are most the WebmasterWorld members. In fact, the report is not yet available as Yahoo_Mike states, "at the moment the Forrester research is for Forrester clients, but hopefully they'll release something on this publicly soon."

So we will have to wait and see.

Yahoo! Search Releases Beta Design

Reports on Yahoo!'s new design has been released as far back as late May with the rumors of Yahoo!'s new home page and inside pages. Now Yahoo! is publically asking people to test out the new design. In fact, do a search at Yahoo! Search on the term search engine and you will see this message to use try out the new design. Here, give it a try below.

Try the new Yahoo! Search:   Search Home

The major difference in the design is the top portion of the page. Its cleaner, the tabs are less tabular, results are shown up higher on the page, the related search is cleaner and the definitions is at the top of the page. Overall, I like the new layout.

Akamai DNS Problem Hits Major Search Engines

"Starting at around 8:30 am EDT (12:30 UTC), a number of sources started to report a widespread Akamai DNS issue. Large web sites, which use Akamai for its DNS service, did no longer resolve. Effected sites are Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Fedex, Xerox, Apple and likely many others.

Some effected domains have removed the Akamai DNS servers and are reachable again using their own DNS servers.

Typically, the domain itself (e.g. 'google.com') still resolves, but popular hostnames, like 'www.google.com' will not resolve. As a result, the web site is no longer reachable.

The effect appears to be world wide. Some of the Akamai servers do respond to pings, but do not respond to DNS queries."

I wasn't going to post this here but its covered at all the major SEM forums.

I would like to apologize for the less frequent updates here the past few days. I hacker from China has been attacking my local network affecting the Internet and productivity at my company. We have successfully installed and configured a Cisco PIX to block the hacker and everything seems to we working well now. I will be away for the remainder of the day at meetings.

MSN & Yahoo Reported to Have Launched New Layout

Danny Sullivan and an other member at SearchEngineWatch Forums reported that they are noticing a new and cleaner layout for MSN Search and Yahoo Search.

In this thread started by Danny Sullivan named MSN Search Unveils Cleaner Look, he says "Just noticed that MSN seems to have taken the cleaner look it promised to rollout on July 1 and made it available on the regular site, http://search.msn.com/."

And, in this thread started by strategicrankings named Yahoo! new result layout, he says "Noticed that this morning. The header is more discrete (no of SERP, time to search etc)."

I personally do not see these layout changes, but its for sure possible.

New White Pages Design at Yahoo! People Search

I frequently use both Yahoo! People Search and Yahoo! Yellow Pages throughout the day. Today I noticed that Yahoo! People Search has a new layout. Not sure when this layout was changed, but I like it.

First thing I noticed was the ability to search the "Entire USA" in the state field, something I have wanted in the past. Additionally, they have the people search bar at the top of the page of your results. So if you make a typo, you do not need to click that back button and reenter the information. You just go to the search box at the top of the screen and adjust the query there.

Yahoo Toolbar has WebRank

I was just talking with someone last night about how Yahoo is trying to be more like Google (i.e. cache, news, etc.) and Google is trying to be more like Yahoo (i.e. local results). I was kind of exaggerating but if anything Yahoo now made it clear that they want to be Google.

Yahoo yesterday released its Yahoo! Companion Toolbar - BETA (version 5.4.9) with WebRank. WebRank versus PageRank, this will be fun for us SEOs. ;)

Yahoo! Web Rank is the name that Yahoo! has given to a technical measurement of a particular URL's popularity. If you choose to enable the Yahoo! Web Rank feature on the Yahoo! Companion Toolbar, a toolbar icon will display the Yahoo! Web Rank value of each URL that you visit. The Yahoo! Web Rank values range from 1 to 10. This feature is currently in Beta release.

URLs in Yahoo & MSN Are Not Complete...

While working on a little project that made a site completely database driven, I realized that Yahoo and MSN incorrectly strip off trailing slashes in URLs (because I started seeing 404 page not found errors in my web logs).

For example, the URL http://www.domain.com/directory/ is linked to as http://www.domain.com/directory from both MSN and Yahoo.

This is bad for two reasons... first of all, it's just plain wrong, the two URLs could in theory be separate documents. Second, it's a waste of bandwidth. Most web servers are configured to add a slash to the end of a URL if there is no file that matches the name, and there *is* a directory with that name via a HTTP redirect. So now, the end user's browser needs to make two requests to the server to get one document.

The reason I figured it out is I *had* directories at one point, but moved to dynamic, database driven content. So the web server wasn't redirecting them with the wrong URL because there was not a directory with that name any longer.

Bad MSN, bad Yahoo... Naughty, boys.

Yahoo Launches New Search - Not Google or Inktomi

Well it is official Yahoo dumps Google search technology. But its not pure Inktomi results as we were expecting. It seems to be more of a mix of a bunch of results including some of the Yahoo directory. But I am not 100% sure yet.

Does this make the Yahoo! Directory submission fee more attractive to its customer? Duh!

"Yahoo replaced Google's results with its own Yahoo Search Technology, which combines an array of recently acquired search technologies, such as Inktomi and commercial search provider Overture Services."

Make sure to keep an eye out for Yahoo Slurp, the new Yahoo Spider.

Visible Tabs by Yahoo! Search

Danny Sullivan wrote a famous article back about three months ago on Searching With Invisible Tabs. This article details the problem that is slowly happening to the Google search engine, where Google keeps adding tabs for users to specify if they are searching for web, images, products, news and other types of searches. Danny predicts that if Google keeps going at this rate you can expect to see dozens of tabs that turn the simple search engine query box into a complicated set of tabs.

I visited Yahoo's search homepage which I just noticed had this "Add or Remove Tabs" link on the left bottom portion of the last tab. So I clicked on it to find the ability to add a total of 9 tabs!

Yahoo! does this with class, they don't require you to have tabs but they give you the option of adding tabs if you desire. They must figure that more advanced users will opt for the tabs and there is no loss on anyones part.

Did Yahoo! miss Danny's point of "invisible tabs", the ability for a search engine to predict which tab the user wants based solely on what query is entered into the search box? Or is this just an intermediate stage until search technology can supply meaningful and accurate results based on the 'style' of how a query is entered?

Finding Ink powered Yahoo results

Thanks Brette Tabke from WMW

I have just found out that if you would like to check your rankings in the new inktomi powered Yahoo you can go to http://search.yahoo.com/ and type in your keyword: I am using "online phramacy" because I am on the first page lol
Normally you would see the google powered: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=online+pharmacy&ei=UTF-8&n=20&fl=0&x=wrt

However if you go to the address bar and at the end of your kw portion of the url add: &tmpl=E088

Like so: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=online+pharmacy&tmpl=E088

This gives you the results for the new Ink powered yahoo :-)
Try it out!

Yahoo! Labs & AdSense in EMail

Two exciting news related items occurred this week and have drummed up a lot of discussion in some forums. Since I have been leaving out Webmaster World (not on purpose) I decided to take some time to plug them.

First news worthy fact is that Yahoo! opened up Yahoo! Labs. Concept taken from Google Labs? I'll leave those questions to the forums. WebmasterWorld is discussing this topic here and SEOChat is discussing it here.

Next news worthy rumor is that Google will now take its AdSense program and allow you to put them in email. This can be huge for so many people and companies. Check out the threads at Webmaster World and SEO Chat.

Exciting stuff, don't you think?

Yahoo! to Switch to Inktomi Results in Q1 2004

As most of you already know, Yahoo! announced two days ago that it will be dropping the Google organic results from its search and switching to its own search acquired back over a year ago from Inktomi. The CEO of Yahoo!, Terry Semel made this statement on January 14th 2004.

SEOs have been preparing for this transition for a while but as you can imagine this announcement had a major impact at the SEO forums. SEO Chat member hotwheel announced the news related in the Google News forum a day ago, Yahoo on Wednesday said it will drop Google during the first quarter of 2004. This announcement and the speculation that grew up to this point generated many topics in the Inktomi Forum at SEO Chat.

Check these threads out, its worthwhile reading. Our own Phoenix, Ben, has been a leading contributor here and at SEO Chat in providing the answers to those in need of a Inktomi specialist.

Yahoo Not to Use Inktomi in Future?

Brief overview: Yahoo! has been using Google's search results to power its organic search service. Yahoo!, over the past year, has purchased several search engine technologies - including Inktomi and Overture (which at that time owned AltaVista and AllTheWeb).

The main speculation was that Yahoo!, since it purchased Inktomi right out, would be using Inktomi results after it leaves Google. We have also seen cases where Inktomi results have been experimented with Yahoo in the main stream search and largely overseas.

Grumpus a moderator over at cre8asiteforums posted at HighRankings Forum his opinion that Yahoo will not being using Inktomi but rather AllTheWeb and/or AltaVista.

Very interested information, read more about it at http://www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2826.
