Google released an update for the iOS Maps app that now lets the navigation feature go into night mode during evening hours.
The release note was "night mode in navigation to see route more easily after dark." A basic feature most navigation systems support, is now added to Google Maps iOS App. I believe the Android version had support for this as well.

It is a small but worthy feature to mention. I am a huge Google Maps user.
