Microsoft Logo AnimatedThe big ad news from last night was that Microsoft is also working on their own technique for tracking ads and replacing the cookie tracking system that has been around for over a decade.

Like Google, who is reportedly working on an AdID solution to replace the cookie also, Microsoft is also working something up.

AdAge reports:

Microsoft is set to become the latest tech giant to develop its own tracking technology to replace the ubiquitous "cookie," which has become the focus of regulators and privacy advocates.

The company is internally developing the technology that would enable tracking across desktop computers, tablets and smartphones running Windows, as well as the company's Xbox gaming console and services including its Internet Explorer web browser and Bing search engine, according to sources close to the company not authorized to speak publicly about Microsoft's plans.

One senior member suggests why these "leaks" are happening now:

My guess is that these companies have already developed this technology and now need to motivate the public into accepting it, hence enlisting giants Facebook, Apple and Amazon to the fear mongering party.

Indeed.
