Google News AMP Referral Source To Get Proper Attribution?

Valentin Pletzer, a Senior Search Analyst at BurdaForward in Germany, asked a nice question in the Google Webmaster Help forums about AMP and Google News.

In short, he asked if Google AMP results can define where the referral came from now that it is both in Google search and Google News. He said the Google News should show news.google.com and Google search should be www.google.com. Right now, I guess it doesn't do that, since it is in the AMP carousel and may strip it out?

Elena from Google agreed and wrote:

Makes sense, thanks for sharing. We have relayed the request to add referrer to the Google News carousel to the Google News engineering team.

It would be very nice to be able to see the source of the referral for AMP.

Google has added some nice AMP reporting to the Google Search Console and hopefully will continue to give tools for publishers to understand the value in AMP.
