Google's John Mueller: Expert Product Descriptions Not Critical For Rankings?

The big holiday shopping season is here and with that, we see a spike of questions around e-commerce site SEO. One question that was asked was about product descriptions and how important it is to change them up from the standard manufacturer's descriptions?

John Mueller from Google answered that although it is a good idea to show your users you are an expert on the product, it might not be critical he said.

The question was "is it a good idea to rewrite product descriptions to avoid duplicate, improve the text quality and make reading more enjoyable?"

John's second response was "it can make sense to do that, if you can do it properly. Show your expertise to users! It's usually not critical though." He said it is "usually not critical though" to write expert product descriptions?
