Facebook LogoFacebook announced a new ad format yesterday called Product Ads.

Product Ads let e-commerce sites promote their products directly in Facebook. Merchants can upload their product catalog and create campaigns targeting certain products to specific audiences. They can also opt for Facebook to automatically deliver the most relevant products to people. These Products Ads can be shown in single or multi-product ad units.

Here are two ad options for Facebook Product Ads:

  • Advertisers can automatically reach people who visited their website/app (via Custom Audiences), or reach people based on specific interests, locations, etc.
  • Advertisers can curate ads as they see fit. For instance, they can highlight products that were viewed on their website/mobile app or showcase best selling products. Or they can create a multi-product ad that highlights the different benefits of a single product.

A WebmasterWorld thread has one webmaster saying this may lead to advertisers pulling some of their ad budget off Google Shopping Ads and onto Facebook Product Ads. Of course, time will tell.
