Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Breaking: Google Caffeine Now Live, Renamed 'Kaffein'
We have been tracking the Google Caffeine index for a really long time. We recently reported it was almost live but today is that day - Caffeine is live! What took so long? Well, we knew it would launch soon but do to mormons being upset with the code-name "Caffeine," due to their dietary restrictions, Google had to change the name. Changing names is a very political and long-process at Google. Google, being Google, decided
  • Google & Other's April Fools 2010 Jokes
I am keeping a running list of Google and other search related sites April Fools jokes at Search Engine Land. So please check out that post for more on the various jokes. My favorite are the 3D ones, especially since YouTube is really 3D and they went text only. Of course, Google changed their name. Plus a lot more. Forum discussion at Google Blogoscoped, Google Maps Help, WebmasterWorld, DigitalPoint Forums, Google Web Search Help and
  • Bing Uses Hyphens As Word Separators in URLs
A Bing Community thread has Bing's program manager, Brett Yount confirming that Bing prefers hyphens in the URLs as a word separator. He said: Hyphens are the preferred character for separating two words in URLs. Google also uses hyphens as word separators so it is a good thing to know both engines handle them pretty much the same way. Nothing ground breaking here, but a solid SEO point to have in your toolkit. Forum discussion
  • Yahoo Shuts Down Yahoo Publisher Network, No One Surprised
Yahoo announced they are closing down the Yahoo Publisher Network, which is the self-service contextual ad network that was set to compete with the extremely successful Google AdSense network. Yahoo's version has always been a failure when compared to Google, for many reasons. Yahoo said: Earlier today, Yahoo! emailed a small group of publishers participating in the Yahoo! Publisher Network self-service beta program (also known as “YPNO” or “Yahoo Publisher Network Online”), to inform them
  • Microsoft Behind Google Because Of Long-Tail Keyword Relevancy?
During Yusuf Mehdi's keynote last week at SES, Yusuf said Microsoft is behind Google due mostly on how they handle the long-tail keyword. eWeek explores this in more detail saying: Microsoft fell so far behind Google in the search engine market because it failed to retrieve relevant results for a long line of less popular queries, a senior Microsoft executive told the crowd at the Search Engine Strategies show here March 25. Such was the
  • 14% Say The Canonical Tag Doesn't Work on Google, Really?
A couple weeks ago we asked if the canonical tag works well on Google. Since it is poll week, and I am offline, I figured I post the results from the poll. We had just under a hundred responses and I am surprised to see as many as 14% said the canonical tag does not work for Google. Most said it does work, but 14% said it does not. There must be some type of
  • Why SEOs Got Into SEO? Poll Results
A couple weeks ago, I asked why did you get into SEO and since I am posting poll results this week, I figured I'd share the results the day I am offline. Now, we had over 400 responses, exactly 444 responses at the time I am posting this, so it is a nice number. Here is the break down: 20% said Love The Dynamic Nature of the Industry18% said Wanted My Site Higher in Search
  • SEO's Now Critique TopSEOs.com
The other day, SEOs went after VerifiedSEO.com and over took it. Now, Edward Lewis is asking "when did TOPSEOs become an Independent Authority on Search Vendors?" Most SEO companies have received an email from TopSEOs in the past. I know I personally received a bunch, basically rewarding my company for being a top SEO company. The thing is, I always deleted them because they seemed spammy. It turns out, this is a real company doing
  • Poll: Most SEOs Use Webmaster Tools But Many Still Use Site Command
Last week we asked how you check to see how many pages of your site is in the Google index. With almost a 150 responses and since this makes for a good scheduled post (I am offline), I figured I'd share the results. 47% said they use Google Webmaster Tools to see how many pages of their site is in the Google index. But 31% said they still use the Google Site Command. I am
  • 77% of SEOs Say Real Time Results Are Spammy
We ran a poll a few weeks ago asking our audience if they found Google's real time search results to be spammy. Since I am offline today, I figured it would be good content to schedule to post for the days I am offline. Overall, 77% said the results were either very spammy or somewhat spammy. 14% said the results were just a little spammy and 8% said there was no spam. Let me share
  • Webmasters Still Judge Sites Based On Google PageRank
A WebmasterWorld thread has a rant from a webmaster and site owner who goes off on people who judge his site based on it's Google PageRank value, yes the toolbar PageRank. He said he is sick and tired of people judging how authoritative and creditable his site is based on how many green bars are lighting up in Google Toolbar. This user said: I'm about ready to blow a gasket. I have an authority site
