Google Search By Image Not Working

Google Search By ImageGoogle's Search By Image, a feature launched in June 2011 is currently not working.

When you upload an image in any format, be it .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .tif, or .webp. Google will return an error message that reads, "The image must be in one of the following formats: .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .tif, or .webp."

The thing is, even if you upload the image in any of those formats, Google says the format isn't good.

Here is a screen capture of the process.

(1) Upload a JPG format, that did work in the past:

(2) The error is returned in seconds:

The issue was first reported this past Thursday, on October 10th in the Google Web Search Help forums. Google's Nealeigh responded the next day, saying:

Thanks so much for the reports!

The team is aware of the issue and is currently working on a fix. Things should be back to normal soon.

We appreciate your taking the time to report the issue.

No, it is still not working.

This must be localized as it works fine from here, and hasn't had any down time during period mentioned.

It's a general bug, remember that some people are still getting the old google homepage, the problem is with the new one.

Do you happen to know if there is any public API by Google that allows app developers to integrate the search by image feature into a 3rd party app? Or do you know where I should look? I tried to google it but mainly found references to a deprecated API for image search (I think it was searching for image results by text anyhow). Thanks.

It easy to see what serp quality has lowest priority for Google.

...or it is a simple bug that will be fixed in due time.

Since Google is aware of the issue, they will fix it

They finally fixed it this morning. Image search drag-and-drop functionality was down for over a week. It is stunning that they let it go this long.

in this case this bug is 2 years old...
