Google Tells Us that PageRank is for Entertainment Purposes Only

This is shocking news, I mean, we all knew PageRank was not something to look at too closely these days, but for Google to come out and say "The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only", kind of shocks me. I can not confirm this to be accurate, but a post at Search Engine Watch just a few minutes ago claims this to be the case. The member said that he emailed Google asking why a page's PageRank is zero and he got the following response from Google.

The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old. If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn't been updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesn't not have a real PR of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date.

Apparently, Google is still using PageRank to rank sites but just not displaying the current value to the Google Toolbar user.

Want to Prove Page rank means nothing? Go into Google type in ANY keyword and LOOK and see what sites are in the top spots.. What is thier PR? MANY MANY times you will see a BIG inconsistancy concerning PR and Placement. PR has never wnd will never mean anything..

Hi there - From what I have found Google Page Rank is made up of the outbound links from your pages. For example I have an e-commerce client who as of a month ago had no Google toolbar PR. Needing content to be able to target keyword terms I have had the owner write articles that we add to the site through a text link to a table of content page. The site now has a Google PR of 4 and the child pages range from 2 to 3 due to proper interlinking. The Table of Contents page as I call it that links to the articles is hitting PR3 and two of the articles already have PR 2 There was no inbound linking done whatsoever. Also tossing in some outbound text links to high Google PR authority sites relevant to your category will raise PR as well. Does this help with rankings yes...remember there are over 100 points in the algo so Google PR is needed somewhat... will it determine ranking results...no...remember there are 100 points in the algo ;-> Clint

"PageRank is for Entertainment Purposes Only" I think we have to distinguish: the pagerank we see is not relevant, the secret pagerank that Google knows is important. Google gives to us a lot of wrong informations like pagerank, number of backlinks, number of pages indexed. All these wrong data are created only to preserve the secret pagerank consistency. In other words "PageRank is so important that you cannot see it"

Recently I had some problems with my pagerank. It is passed from 5 to 6, but the number of visits is not changed at all. Did Google show to me a wrong page rank? I suspect I have chosen keywords too popular for my site (not popular enough).

Google PR has big problems. When a site home to a hacker that defaced our site has a PR of 4 and our mom and pop site has a PR of 2. unreal!!!!! Yet, one of our other sites has been banned for bad language in the past. So let me see if I have this right? I can hack sites and brag about it and I will "rank up" as long as I'm polite while doing it...yea ok pal/Google... Here's another example: Lets take a site like csszengarden which is a PR 8, yet they have obviously optimize for the spiders and not humans as Google would suggest. But the fact that they use css and so on makes them rank up. They should be penalized for putting their nav on the right in an effort to let there content be the first thing the spiders come to, on the site... Last time I checked we read left to right?

IMO "entertainment purposes only" phrase only means we see old page rank on toolbar. But that page rank is correct (only obsolete). Think having visitors from google is more important than seeing your page rank on the toolbar.
