Google: The Google Update Was Not Panda Or Penguin

google barrelsYesterday we covered that Google seems to have done a major update the other day and Google actually responded to us saying "as usual, we're continuing to make tweaks, but we don't have a specific "update" to announce." I then pestered them and they confirmed what we saw was not related to Penguin or Panda - which may surprise people.

So what was it? Some people are saying mobile stuff but truth is, it is not. I have observed too many complaints from people about the ranking changes and the vast majority said it is not mobile specific. Either they have a mobile site, or their mobile rankings did not change, or they didn't even get that mobile webmaster tools notification.

It is hard to nail down what this was. It seems like there was a "tweak" that Google is aware of but they don't want to call it an algorithm "update" of any kind.

Just like the Google Juno update from January, Google wouldn't call that Panda or Penguin related either.

So what is going on with Panda or Penguin these days?

There is still ongoing discussion around these large fluctuations in the Google search results at the forums.
