Google Penguin Turns Three Years Old Today

Google Penguin BirthdayToday is the third year anniversary of the launch of the Penguin algorithm.

The original Penguin algorithm launched on April 24, 2012 and impacted about 3% of search queries by targeting unnatural links.

Since then, Google released Penguin 2.0 on May 24, 2012, Penguin 2.1 on October 4, 2013 and Penguin 3.0 on October 18, 2014. Since then there were a few tweaks to Penguin that ended in December 2014. There have been no real Penguin refreshes since.

In any event, Penguin is not a big fan of SEOs these days. The really slow update cycles and the uncertainty around the algorithm makes it one of the most hated algorithms in the SEO space.

That being said, Google is happy with it for the most part and does have plans to make it better over time.

Three years ago today, the SEO space around links changed forever with the Penguin algorithm.

We dressed up this site in honor of this Google update.
