Google Incentivizes Google+ Hashtag Spam

Google+ Hashtags Now On Google SearchGoogle quietly announced on Google+ via Zaheed Sabur, a software engineer at the company, that you can now search for hashtags on Google.com and see results from Google+.

Go ahead, search for [#throughglass] or [@iphone] or anything that people might use to tag their content on Google+. On the right hand rail, you will see popular Google+ shares scrolling up and down.

Here is a picture:

Google+ Hashtags Now On Google Search

Notice at the way bottom are links to Twitter or Facebook.

Now, publishers, users, etc, have more of a reason to use hashtags in their shares on Google+. Now, you have more of a reason to share things that might not be exactly relevant to a specific hashtag, just to get people to notice or simply to annoy or spam people.

Of course, Google is good at weeding out spam, so keep that in mind. Also, people have to explicitly search for #hashtags on Google search, which most people don't and won't.

Google said:

  • When you search on Google for a hashtag, say [#AmericasCup] or [#WaterfallWednesday], a set of relevant Google+ posts may appear to the right of regular results.
  • You’ll only be able to see posts that have been shared publicly or shared with you.
  • If you click on any of these posts you'll go to Google+, where you'll see the full set of relevant posts.
  • You'll also see links to search for these hashtags on other social sites.

Of course, I have to end this with a video that explains how we use hashtags:
