Doc Sheldon

This is part of the say something nice about an SEO/SEM series - feel free to nominate someone over here.

Doc Sheldon, 65 years old, with his wife and daughter in San Diego, California. Doc has been in the marketing world for over 40 years, two-thirds of that time was in offline marketing. He is a man that deeply cares about each individual person he meets offline or online. He devotes a ton of his time to making sure people feel appreciated and valued, which is such an amazing skill he has.

I cannot count or even fathom the amount he has contributed to our industry. Via the old forums, new forums, social networks like Facebook and of course all his content and education he has given over to our industry.

Ever meet one of those people and look into their eyes and just see kindness? That is how people feel about Doc.

Donna Cavalier nominated Doc and wrote:

Doc Sheldon has a great way of looking at issues from more than one angle. He makes me think, and I really like that about him. He's also a fantastic writer, and you know I cannot resist being impressed by that. I'd love to hear about all his life's escapades some day. I think there are probably quite a few entertaining tales in there.

Doc Sheldon Bio: With over 40 years in marketing (2/3 of that offline), Doc now focuses on the technical aspects of SEO. His primary client services are forensic SEO, site audits and penalty recoveries. He launched his SEO practice in 2003, after “retiring” from his business management consulting business, and ever since, he’s been fascinated with the confluence of the Semantic Web and AI.

Doc has lived in 11 different countries and 11 states in the U.S. and has always enjoyed immersing himself in whatever local culture he found himself. With the advent of the Internet, it became even easier to learn and share with new acquaintances, plus he and his family presently keep a second home in Mexico, where they enjoy spending time when possible.

Doc owns Top Shelf Copy, a content strategy and copywriting agency and Intrinsic Value SEO, his SEO agency. He also co-owns Search News Central, which he and his partner are in the midst of expanding to provide regional versions in the UK and Australia.

Favorite thing about the SEO community? Whenever any sort of important event occurs to one of ours, we see our colleagues rally quickly to offer their support. Sometimes that’s condolences for the loss of a loved one, a pet or a long-time client. Sometimes it’s congratulations for a new job, home, addition to the family or a speaking gig. Sometimes that support is emotional, sometimes it’s financial. Often, it’s both.

There’s a sense of community that shows that regardless of differences of opinion or levels of experience, we’ve all got each other’s back. Most of us have had occasion to ask a technical question of others – many of whom are essentially our competitors. The willingness to help, teach and share is phenomenal.

One piece of advice to the SEOs out there? Learn to think like a search engineer. That will help you see what’s possible and what’s practical. Armed with that, you can often help your clients reach a goal before their competition even knows there’s a new target. The key in that is “think”. Don’t follow, lead. I suggest you read the free ebook, “Critical Thinking for the Discerning SEO” for some great input from other community professionals.

Favorite things in general? I love reading science fiction and analyzing the supposed technology for its theoretical soundness. I also enjoy ancient history and basically anything to do with theoretical physics. I’m also a hard-core carnivore and I enjoy cooking.

What you want to be known for in the SEO space? The same thing I want to be known for in life… just as one of the "good guys".

You can learn more about Doc on his websites at Intrinsic SEO, Top Shelf Copy and Search News Central.
