Chris Winfield compiled a fun industry related post to read named How Did You Get Started in SEO?
He basically asked some of the more well-known SEOs in the space, how they got their start in SEO. Some stories are pretty standard, while others are not. The standard story is, I had a client, they wanted to know how to come up in a search engine and here I am now. Then there were some not so standard stories.
Here are quick links to the stories:
- Aaron Chronister
- Aaron Wall
- Adam Audette
- Danny Sullivan
- Dave Naylor
- Debra Mastaler
- Jill Whalen
- John Andrews
- Joost de Valk
- Loren Baker
- Marcus Tandler
- Marshall Simmonds
- Melanie Mitchell
- Dr. Michael Dorausch
- Patrick Altoft
- Rae Hoffman
- Rand Fishkin
By the way, we ran a poll a while back on Why SEOs Got Into SEO?

I personally got into SEO (recently, as a graduate) because I love the measurability of it. I like stats and research but I also like marketing, and I think that SEO has enough of both of those things to be a great fit for me.
