An SEO was kind enough to share his HTML attribute SEO test results with the folks over at WebmasterWorld. He basically wanted to test and see if Google indexed and ranked certain HTML attributes or simply ignore them.
He tested the following attributes:
- File name
- Link text
- Image name
- Image alt
- Image title
- Anchor text
He conducted three tests and published the results at WebmasterWorld. Here are his three results set, but for more context, see the thread:
Set One:
- Filename: keyword1 is indexed (linked page not rank in serps)
- Link title: keyword2 is ignored
- Image name: keyword3 at the moment is ignored in search of the web, but this keyword is indexed in Google Images.
- Image alt: keyword4 is indexed
- Image title: keyword5 is ignored
- Anchor text: keyword6 is ranked and indexed
Set Two:
- Filename: keyword1 is indexed
- Link title: keyword2 is ignored
- Image name: keyword3 at the moment is ignored in search of the web, but this keyword is indexed in Google Images
- Image alt: keyword4 is ranked and indexed
- Image title: keyword5 is ignored (now this is indexed becouse it had writed at the comments)
- Link title: keyword6 is ignored
- Anchor text: keyword7 is ranked
Set Three:
- Filename: keyword1 is indexed
- Link title: keyword2 is ignored
- Image name: keyword3 not used in this test, the filename is a common name
- Image alt: keyword4 is ranked and indexed
- Image title: keyword5 is ignored
- Link title: keyword6 is ignored
- Anchor text: keyword7 is ranked and indexed
Forum discussion at Last word anchor text:keyword8 is indexed but this key isn't ranked! WebmasterWorld.

I always find it interesting when independent testing confirms what most of us already know. Now if we could just get all the "experts" out there to stop offering their "Secret tips to SEO" that include useless information like keyword rich link and image titles. Purely for users only.

Now we just need someone to do some real testing on variations, such as ranking factors contributed to image name density (multiple similar images names) and all other density factors. Who has only a single image per page? Get real. The information the OP provided is incomplete and deceiving in my mind since he did not provide an accurate description or method to reproduce results etc. etc.

Granted maybe we all know this information already but change happens and I don't think we should discourage colleagues from continuing to test and then publish the results. If someone came along and said I tested 500 factors and I think I have the algorithm figured out I'm pretty sure we would be thankful and read it!

Hi, You can see the tests here First Test http://goo.gl/BlMgO Second test http://goo.gl/KUc7y Third test http://goo.gl/2mnUb On third test, if you search the LAST KEYWORD of link on bottom child boy ("keywrod7 por un sahara libre y por el derecho de su pueblo a poder vivir en paz keyword8"), the linked page doesn't rank! Don't write the keywords here or the test will be changed ;)
