New Google BarGoogle announced their new top navigation changes. It includes dropping the Google black bar launched in June of this year and replacing it with a white top, Google logo with navigation drop down and Google + sharing features.

So instead of navigating to the other Google services at the top bar, you mouse over the Google logo and click on the drop down menu. Here is a bigger look at that, with the "more" section expanded.

Here is the full length top bar, with the profile information and Google + sharing features:

New Google Bar

Google started testing this in late October and I guess they like the results so decided to keep it.

Here is a video demo:

Pretty crummy.  It's clunky and slow compared to the old navigation bar.  Them claiming they are trying to save space is total bull.  If they wanted to save space, they wouldn't add ridiculous amounts of unnecessary padding between things like they've done with the new G-mail layout which cuts visibility down to about half what it used to be.  Claiming it's simpler is another load of bull; everyone knows drop-down menus are more complex to use (due to taking multiple mouse movements to operate) than having a simple list of tabs run along the top/side of a page.  Despite Google being full of hooey and my hate for the drop-down menu, all the links for different types of searches are still available in the column on the left, so I just have to get used to going over there to switch search types instead of going to the top.  In other words, it's no big deal for me personally even though it has changed the page for the worse.

I hate the search redesign. It hides critical functionality. I can't just click on a link I can see, but must take an extra step. A lot of people won't be able to find the functionality they need. After Google sprang this on me the other night, I switched my default browser search to other engines. As Bruce Tognazzini recently posted, "Graphic designers, left unchecked and unschooled, are likely to aim for maximum visual simplicity at the expense of both learnability and usability. Such interfaces require users to discover new capabilities by clicking around and seeing what happens. Users don't do that. In the most extreme cases, functionality desperately needed by the majority of users may actually be removed from products in the effort to generate visual simplicity." Two thumbs down, Google. This stinks.

hate it hate it hate....and am I wrong that basically all your history of visited sites pops right up for whoever is looking..not that I am visiting anyplace that would be a shocker for someone to see but this new drop down is clunky - covers a third of your screen everytime you want to search on google....it reminds me of the toshiba side bar you can't get rid of....HATE IT!!!!! I will still use google occassionally but it is no longer my home page and won't be as long as they are this instrusive on MY computer.

I want to be able to click on Images and Maps *quickly* and not have to wait for the drop-down to open, then scroll down to find the links. If Google does not give the old link options I'll be looking for a fix or new search engine.

The new drop down menu bar takes MORE room than the toolbar that was along the top.  I prefer menus to appear when links are clicked, and not when the mouse runs across the link.    This new drop down bar also appears everytime  google opens I do NOT like it. There was nothing wrong with the previous toolbar, which is still currently available at google.com viewed with Internet Explorer, but not with chrome. Check this yourself by clicking 'go to google.com' at the bottom right of the google homepage.

Why do people always have to bitch about new features. You'll get used to it in a week anyways.

I absolutely loathe and despise this new drop down menu. The reason I even use Google is because of the clean screen. Now every time I open a browser page I have to clear this new junk off my screen. I am seriously considering replacing Google.

It doesn't take up more room. All they did was merge the black bar at the top with the row that has the Google logo and the search box. So the new redesign makes the layout more compact.

I liked Google because it was quick and i never had to touch the mouse (except when clicking a link) , lazy, I know but now I have to click this, click that... It's just a pain and makes the process more difficult!!

From the numerous people I have spoken with and countless opinions read, I have yet to hear one convincing approval of this ridiculous new menu from anyone. Sure there are plenty of users that go with the flow and accuse us of being complainers. However, dead fish also go with the flow. Google, I absolutely LOATHE that new drop down bar and more importantly, you have lost a customer. What happened, once upon a time you used to hire learned and talented employees? What a shame!!!

Readibility and accessibility is now reduced, wtf, seriously. I used to be a Google fanboy as a techy, but I was blind. Google is more and more disappointing. I don't want to stop using their products, but if they keep at it, it will be simply too annoying to keep on using them.
