Google Search Quality Improving Or Not?

A WebmasterWorld thread has several complaints about Google's search quality. Tedster sets the tone with his post:

In our Google Updates and SERP Changes thread, scottsonline made this observation: "Day to day I won't find the same results in google and am actually bookmarking things again"

Me too - and rather than take the original thread into a side topic, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread.

This is one of the most troubling sign for me about Google in the present moment. For a long time I noticed that Google was so good I barely needed to use browser bookmarks at all. But now I definitely do, or else I lose track of information that I value. And no, I don't find that Bing is any better for this. I wish it were.

I don't know if it's the result of any one change or if it's a combination effect. But I do know that I feel like a valuable tool has been trashed.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

Then you see complaint after complaint. So I figured I'd run a poll below and ask you to take it and then bug everyone you know to take it.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.

Interesting point, and agree it can sometimes be frustrating when the information provided in Google's search results doesn't match your needs or when you just can't find that article you once read a year or two ago. But I think while Google obviously has a role to play in improving their search results, so to searchers in learning how to use plus signs for required words, hyphens for irrelevant words and inverted commas for phrases. There is no two ways about it - information is growing at an exponential rate, and there's still only 10 Google search results. Searchers surely must take some responsibility for better search results?

I think it is getting worse, but I dont think only google is to blame. As Alan mentions the information is growing day by day. However there is a lot of searces where top10 is almost exclusively spam, when you look at the backlink profile at is only spammy paid backlinks. I really hope google will adresse this problem even more in the near future. /Thomas Frost

I would say that is is something but it is still with the old google search. I noticed the search suggestions and the blue arrow where the top site of a given search is visible.
