June 2009 Google PageRank Update: Kind Of Early

There are hundreds of reports across the web about a Google PageRank update. Most of you know, I am not a fan of the PageRank score displayed in the Google Toolbar, but I report it anyway, because I report what SEOs care about, which I determine by looking at threads in the forums.

What is interesting about this PageRank update is that it comes less than a month from the last PageRank update. The May 2009 PageRank update took place on May 27th/28th. This one started last night on June 23rd.

Normally, toolbar PageRank updates happen about every three months. So to see a widespread update like this just a month later, is interesting. Outside of that, I don't have much more to add.

Would it be paranoid to think it was around this whole "nofollow" is not allowed then partly allowed issue brought up at SMX Advanced?

Yea, cause as Matt said, this nofollow change happened several months ago.

Since the last Toolbar PR update we have seen it regularly updated, not just with this monthly burst as you report - Google seems to have decided to keep it much more up to date. In my view this makes the Toolbar PR more useful, as one of the main criticisms levelled against it was its infrequent updates.

Maybe this is part of the "speeding up the web" deal Google is doing now. I would like to see updates more, if only to see if I am being penalized for anything..

I agree with Jaamit - it's nice to see the toolbar being updated more frequently. From my view Google appears to be doing a lot of strange things since the first of the year. I'm not sure about the nofollow issue because to tell you the truth I've not seen much of an effect one way or the other with the attribute. A little over blown IMHO.

jaamit is probably correct they seem to have decided to update more frequently, perhaps even due to people wanting the toolbar to be fresher. and personally I'm glad to see them updating more frequently, though nothing has changed for my site.

Hi Barry; You say you don't look at the PR toolbar, which is a good thing, but then you say you report what forums are talking about. We understand what forums you look at, so it's understandable why you think this pagerank toolbar crap is something the industry cares about. Why not try to teach about why it is NOT important instead of spreading the crap like these other forums do daily? I have not cared about the PR toolbar in years and don't even have the darn thing loaded. Why this industry keeps spreading bad information is beyond my comprehension. ya; so I said it. sure did. someone has to.

Doug, I did several times here. Here is just one of those posts http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/007336.html

I have to disagree with a lot of SEOs who think Toolbar PR is a load of crap and 'for entertainment purposes only'. For a start, the whole 'entertainment purposes only' comment from a Googler was justified by the fact that it's only updated every few months: http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/001214.html. Well now that reason has gone, or at least diminished. To my mind the Toolbar PR is useful AS LONG AS you don't make it more important than it is. As long as you bear in mind that (a) it's only an approximation of the real PR score that only Google knows; (b) PR is only a measure of relative IMPORTANCE based on quality/quantity of inbound links and far from the only factor in calculating rankings - it doesnt say anything about RELEVANCE, and (increasingly important) TRUST. Finally Toolbar PR is Google's way of communicating penalties and 'slaps on the wrist' to webmasters - a sudden PR drop and you know you've been caught. So Toolbar PR still tells you something and is useful if you dont misunderstand it. To wish it didn't exist or ignore it completely is a bit silly, IMO.

It sure would be interesting if the updates happened every month.

I would appreciate monthly PR updates as it would be easier to work out whaich changes were having a positive or negative impact

Why PageRank is given on the blog that never updates? I still blog PageRank 1, while creating a new blog even directly PageRank 3.

Yes, it is very good, from may and june, pagerank may be update frequently. But till now, we have not found any evidence to show whether google would update PR in July.
