Google March 2009 PageRank Update or Glitch?

Over the weekend, I have seen tons and tons of threads in several forums with webmasters and SEOs complaining that their PageRank score in the Google Toolbar took a dive.

I will just list two threads, because I cannot list all of them. There is a thread at DigitalPoint Forums and Google Webmaster Help.

The thing is, I didn't see anyone happy with the new PageRank score they received. If you look closely at the Google Webmaster Help you will see, Googler, JohnMu say:

Looking at your site, it might have been that there was some kind of glitch that occurred just as the latest round of Toolbar PageRank was put together. In a case like that, you just need to wait for the next update (we do 3-4 updates per year). That said, this is generally not something that will affect your site's crawling, indexing or ranking, so I wouldn't worry about it! Don't worry about PageRank :-).

So, with this guys particular site, there was an issue exporting his site's PageRank to the Toolbar, during Google's quarterly export. There may have been other issues with other pages impacted by this export.

I don't know for sure, but what I do know is that we should not worry about Toolbar PageRank.

Forum discussion at DigitalPoint Forums and Google Webmaster Help.

If Google only exports page rank 3-4 times a year I will eat my own shoe.

It's as regular as clockwork. 6 large exports last year and new blog posts get an auto export of 0 every 6 weeks.

Does Google issue the true page rank of a page, or do this issue a public page rank value but store a hidden true page rank value?

Google never shows you your live true pagerank in the toolbar.

Oh my GOd ... My PR is 0 ... Thanks for your inform

Hi guys.Same here. My PR went down to 0 from 3. Really disgusting.....

Nothing happend by me still PR 3 Position still the same...Puh lucky guy because i saw a lot of websites they go done google must change a lot.

No change in PR for my site.

mine went down too from pr2 to pr0. I was so unlucky about this

we have seen an increase from pr 1 to 2 for our sports car hire website

One of my sites went from 3 to zero. I wouldn't mind but as everyone else seems to care about PR then it is a shame this has happened. Maybe it's because I do follow all the hosting reviews on my site. Fingers crossed for the next update.

crap- mine when down too. I saw it got lost a few months ago however, so Google is already on its second update, or maybe end of Dec. Mine is a blog. The blog posts when updated regaulary using keywords from the long tail really helped, but soon as I stopped blogging for a few months, the PR dropped OFF. So, now Imm goona try to start blogging.

My question to the people above is that many of you report a PR drop, but it seems most of your sites were already low. It also seems most of your sites may be blogs.. like mine. So if this is true, then we have a problem with google trusting domain age, link juice, and a new and interesting factor (or is it), which is page content FRESHNESS.

Loves it- now go watch a video on my site. xoxo, E

Hi guys, my PR has stayed the same for quite some time now...however I have seen a notable drop in traffic...any ideas.

None of mine changed, has there definately been an update?

My site just went from 2 to 0.

It's strange because I have a nicely focused subject in a never before used niche subject. Only a few weeks after launching the site I was rewarded with a PR 2. Now for no apparent reason, Google gives me 0. What gives??

No change in Page Rank for my site: its still PR 4 and climbing in the SERPs....

No change in PR as of this brief update. The noise about this update seems to focus on penalizing those that haven't followed white hat seo at least that's what I have read in the many posts about this update. Look out for the real update at the end of March and early April. Hoping to move from a pr3 to a pr5 with all the new links at the next update.

man, my pr was shortlived. just when i was surprised that my blog suddenly got a pr3 rating, after a few weeks i was surprised to see it go back to 0. so with all my other blogs in my domain

Hello,

I've recently lost my Google PR which used to be 5/10 and is now 0/10 due to Google's Dance this month. My situation is very strange though and if we can figure this out, it may help everyone else. Here are the details...

I have many sites that I host, all domain names DNS point to hostgator but some of the actual sites [just the www portion of the domain name] point to another server. The sites that are on the other server all lost their Google PR while the sites that the www part of the domain name still reside on hostgator actually all rose higher on Google's searches.

The sites that are on the other server also get errors in their unique Google webmaster tools for the sitemaps and more particularly, Google states that it cannot index my robots.txt files.

Here is a screenshot of how I have my DNS settings for my site: http://www.achievewebdesign.com/DNS-ScreenShot.jpg.

If anyone can figure this out, we may be on to something that could possibly help others.

Thanks.

Hello All,

I just wanted to follow up with some new findings... All of the sites that I set up on the server that had the www part of the domain name forwarded forwarded didn't have the proper IP number and the www. part was initially set up using CNAME but we recently changed it to A which I'm told is much better and doesn't look like a forward.

My point is that I think Google is removing Page Rank on sites that it might look like is being re-directed or might take too long to access due to many "hops" that it may have to take to get there.

Those of you who lost your Page Rank may want to do the following:

Check and see how your domain name is set up and also how your hosting company [or your server] is set up, how many hops it takes to get to your site... also you may want to find out if your site is on a shared IP or a dedicated IP. If it's a shared one, find out how many other sites are on that same IP and possibly find out what type of sites are on the same IP address. I've found success in putting a site on it's own IP just to make sure there aren't any issues with Google.

Good luck everyone.

John

hey no. we have the same situation. my i got blogs with pr3 and i checked back after 2 weeks i was shocked that all my blogs have zero PR. sucks!

HI Folks,

I feel great that Google is doing some good work here. There has been lot of PR drops and will find more drops in future too. Google's algo is in constant updations and this year June 2009 will be a testing year where many sites which work on duplication will get there pages de-indexed. Already many portal sites have got there sites de-indexed by google.

Last year 2008 google had already discussed about Duplication issues and cross linking which "Googlers" have taken seriously. So there will be lot to see in the search results.

Best of luck!

My pr has stayed the same on our website, however I have noticed some other seo companies pr has been updated. High Position is now a 5, and weblinx have dropped to a 0. Wow, shocker for others going to a pr 0. Lets see if things change again over the next week or so.

My rankings have stayed the same for about 3-4 months and I'm really hoping they go up.. Luckily, they have stayed the same and not decreased.

My page rank has been static for the last 9 months, even after spending the last 6 months on seo projects and almost rewritint the entire site, a change either way should at least reflect the changes I have made, just how long do you have to wait?

I am dying for waiting next update!

I'm sure hoping that I fair better than I did this last time.
I was wondering if there was something I wasn't doing right.

Google is always going to tell you not to worry about PageRank.
There making Millions of Dollars a day.

I've also noticed problems with there Indexing of my pages as well.
I think they are reconfiguring there Search Engine, While there doing that the small guy is paying for it.

Just my two cents.

Well, im glad pagerank will never have anything to do with rankings.

Pagerank is just for those who work on the "buy/sell links" market.

I got a PR of 3 in Dec 08 and expecting 5 in this update. Is it too much to expect?

No change, I wish I have at least 3 :-)

No change in pr All pages have the same pr as before 3 months.

Pr is only one of the factors in determining final page ranking for a particular search term in real time. My site was droped from 3 to 2 (in 2008) but performed well in search queries for my key terms. No need to worry if some one sees fall in PR say from 3 to 2 or 4 to 3.

No change for us PR3 as usual.

Hello All,

I just wanted to update everyone on my latest findings... I moved my site: achievewebdesign.com from the new server we had it on to another server and then re-submitted my sitemaps to Google and low and behold, the "Network unreachable: robots.txt unreachable" error went away!!! Now it's just a matter of time before Google does it's thing and I re-gain my Page Rank.

I hope this helps everyone out!

John

mine went down 4 to 3

Hoping mine rises as I am now PR0. Well it is a new site!

Mine stayed the same. PR5, but I noticed yesterday that all the bars for every site I went to were at zero.

My pagerank has rise this afternoon from 0 to 1... A great rise :(

My PR has been at 2 ever since New Year's Day. I was hoping to see it rise to 3or 4.

Hey,

Now after 3 months from 31st Dec 08, Google finally update my site’s Pr as on 2nd April 09.
@@

http://www.seowonders.com

Our PR did fail to register in the Google toolbar about a week ago but as of today our PR did go up on 3 websites.

I had a page rank of "4." A week ago I switched my sitemap due to low traffic- signed up with www.AutomaticSiteMap.com.

Now my page rank is "0".

I will switch my sitemap back. I just wanted to warn everyone.

My site went down from 4 to 3. On the plus side, we had a lot of new content that went up after the last update, so a bunch of previously unranked pages at least have a ranking now.

Still really bummed about the dip.

All sites often show no rank lately in FF for me including google.com.
Pretty strange, has not happened in the past.

> I didn't see anyone happy with the new PageRank score they received

Some PageRanks went up, some went down. Looking at the data it was not predominately a positive or negative change in PR. You can see some sample histories of PR here: http://www.rankinghistory.com/

I have 23 Websites nothing change with Pagerang but the Positons went down!

My website is still same . . . . . .. PR=0

:-(

i hope my rank rise up nex

My homepage still at PR2, but a deeper page in my blog has a PR3.

Traffic has increased by a factor of 10, mostly form Google in the last 12 months.

Content is King!

no word yet on any update for june, I will keep you all posted and let you know if anything changes.

Dont forget that pagerank is how the googlebot experience your website in terms of quality. You got to play around with the googlebot and make updates often so that your online value of content is interesting to the www audience. Updating and redesigning your site often is the best way to score pagerank points. Pagerank is not named after Lawrence page if you think that. Its a ranking system like the army use e.g a pagerank 10 is a top officer a pagerank 0 is the value of a foot soldier. Build your site like a organization. Apply organization theory and use that active in your sites structure with main sites and undersites. Remember to use logics. Good luck

My rank went down :(

My PR is still same:-(, I don't know what is google doing....

hey my blog pr is down 4 to 0. i have 3 blogs having 4,4 and 3 pr respectively. what is google doing? benchod google

When is the next update?

Next PR update is expected to be in second week of October.....

six month back I bought two sites , I never build any linkbuilding and seo services, luckily I got PR 1 when I registered a sites, may be that is already used by some one, but now its droped to PR0, my another site is related music niche , I 've posted nearly 10 posts only, but this site PR is suddenly increased from PR0 to PR3 , I really happy with this one, I think google used some different algorithm while calculating PR..
