Purple Spotlight Wide Yahoo

The Wall Street Journal reports that Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer said in an earnings call that they have a new deal with Oracle that when someone installs a Java update, it will prompt the user to switch their default search engine to Yahoo Search.

Starting this month, users who install or update Oracle’s Java software will be prompted to make Yahoo their browser’s default search engine and home page.

This is what the prompt looks like:

Java Yahoo

Java installs have done this forever, it feels deceptive and unethical but it works for market share.

One person at WebmasterWorld said, "This makes me even happier than I dumped Java from my system. (The constant update notices were aggravating enough without having Yahoo! forced down my throat.)"

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.
