Google: We Won't Penalize For Emojis Or Symbols In Your Snippets

emoji police penalty

Yesterday, we reported how we saw emojis back in the Google results and as a coincidence, someone asked John Mueller in the Google Hangout on Google+ yesterday if Google will penalize sites that do that. John Mueller said no, they will not.

At the 35:55 mark into the video, John Mueller answered this question:

Many descriptions use emojis or symbols as an eye-catcher. How tolerant is Google? As far as I know, such descriptions are not conform to the guidelines.

He said:

So we generally try to filter those out from the snippets, but it is not the case that we would demote a web site or flag it as web spam if it had emojis or other symbols in the description.

So if sites are abusing it, Google will try to strip the emojis or symbols out of the display in the snippets but not remove the site or demote the site in the Google search results.
