Google Spam Reporting

John Mueller replied on Twitter to someone asking if they should remove comments that pretty much praise the blog post but don't add any more value. Such as "great post" types of comments or as the user put it "This article really inspired me."

I am a bit surprised by John Mueller's response, he said "that's really up to you. For me, some of these can be legit, others are just link-drops." Well, I am not too surprised he said it that way but truth is, I'd say 99% of those types of comments are spam and link drops.

This site gets tons of comments and it blocks even more, mostly automatically using Disqus. A ton of the link drops we get are comments in the realm of "great post" style comments. Here is the first few comments in my spam buck, I decided to look so I can share fresh examples:

Great Post Comment Spam

It is very rare to get a comment from someone that says "great post" or that style without it containing a link to their web site. So if I was giving the advice, I'd say it more like, "the vast majority of those types of comments are added to try to manipulate our algorithms. I'd be very cautious about approving them." Or I'd say something like that.

Now, watch the comments below - you will find tons of people saying "great post," just to play with me.
