Google Maps Highlights Robert E. Lee's Birthday Instead Of Martin Luther King Yesterday For Some

Yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States but in some states, instead of Google showing adjusted holiday hours for Martin Luther King, they said the adjust holiday hours were for Robert E. Lee's birthday instead. Google will show a message about store hours may be impacted on national holidays.

There were vast complaints on Twitter and in the Google Web Search Help forums (tons of them).

Here is a picture:

Google Maps Rel Hours

Here is what most of the US saw:

Google Maps Mlk Hours

I was able to replicate it yesterday but only in specific states in the United States. Specifically in Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi where they combine MLK and REL's birthdays on the same day.

So I thought it was intentional, Google was just going by a database. But Google reportedly apologized for the mess up saying:

We apologize for any offense this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue as quickly as possible.

Very interesting.

Forum discussion at Twitter and in the Google Web Search Help.
