Are Directories Useful for Search Engine Optimization? Which are Ideal?

Is it useful for your search engine optimization efforts to focus on building directories? Which directories are optimal? In a Cre8asite Forums thread, these questions are discussed.

EGOL writes in with a very valuable piece of information:

If it is a directory where anyone can add their link then the value of a link from that directory will be very low to none. However, if it is a very selective directory, where every site in it is high quality then the value of the link could be very high.

Make sure that your directories have the right kind of information. Administrator sanity adds the following advice:

I'd also stay clear of directories that link to sites promoting things like diet pills, casinos debt consolidation etc.

Eric Wu points to one of our posts that indicate that Yahoo! is devaluing the emphasis of directories.

A few minutes ago, I also wrote about the usefulness of link exchanges.

Discussion continues at Cre8asite Forums.
