A WebmasterWorld thread has a discussion around what these SEOs feel will be the most important ranking factors in 2011. Guess what? In this 2011 SEO thread, no one is talking about links or link popularity.

Instead they are discussing social factors, brand factors and human factors. The three main things SEOs think 2011 will be about include:

  • Social Factors such as Facebook and Twitter
  • Brand Factors & Prominence
  • Less Ranking Factors, More People Factors

Yes, the first and the last go hand in hand but there are ways of not using social factors to think human factors.

That is retarded. Are people forgetting that Internet Marketing != SEO or do people really think that the #1 most important search engine ranking factor in 2011 is going to be activity on something like Facebook, which isn't even crawled. Science isn't governed by concensus, you don't take a concensus for the value of pi, or the atomic weight of hydrogen. The answer is either right, or it is wrong, no matter how many people believe in it. It looks like you've tapped a big pile of wrong. Then again, it is WebmasterWorld, so I'm unsurprised. Over the years that place has spawned more crackpot theories and general quackery than any other location in the known universe. Quality links are going to continue to be the most important offpage factor in search engine ranking for this year, next year, and many years to come. That includes links from publicly crawlable pages on social network sites, of course, but such sites aren't going to get a special bonus like so many people believed you got from .edu sites or DMOZ for years, despite evidence (and intuition) to the contrary, until Matt Cutts finally literally said in one of his videos that they didn't. SEO, however, is likely to drop in importance, and continue to do so. It will likely remain the most cost effective way of getting traffic, but with more and more Internet time spent on places like Facebook, and not searching, Internet Marketing is going to, rightly, focus more on things like social networks and viral marketing. You poll would be correct, as such, if it were about Internet Marketing as a whole, not Search Engine Optimization specifically.

DARN Search Engine Ranking Factors.....I guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and start some social media profiles. Does it really matter that I think Twitter is a waste? Is it just me or isn't anyone else really busy...too busy to play on Facebook and Twitter. I gotta hustle a living and that's hard. I still thinking links from sites is more important. The more text links from a multitude of websites is the way to go. That and good onpage optimization! CAn you drive traffic to a site straight from twitter or facebook? I mean I know you can but is this a big source for a site like SEO Round Table?
