OrkutGoogle announced that after ten years, they will be closing down Orkut, their first social network.

Google is shutting down the service on September 30, 2014 but the public communities will be archived and viewable starting on the shutdown date. Google added:

It's been a great 10 years, and we apologize to those still actively using the service. We hope people will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond.

Orkut opened to the public, not a private beta, in October 2006 but was launched in 2004.

You can learn more about the closure on this page.

I'd love to know what Google really thinks of Google+ They more or less forced any Google Account holder / YouTube user into having a Google+ account, which all lie dormant and unwanted. In addition, Webmasters panicked and adopted Authorship, Google+ business pages, and these have to be updated through fear of losing ranking rather than any practical use. I suspect Google will never admit defeat on it but I'd love to know what they really think of the white elephant they created.

No, you need a Google account, Google+ is an optional part of that. You don't need to create a Google+ account to do anything other than Google+. I have a few secondary Google accounts which use YouTube and several other Google services, none of them have G+ accounts. G+ is a brilliant social network, basically FB without the spam/crap and a far better interface. I've totally stopped using FB because of the constant game spam.

Yet another HUGE G$$gle fail. Goofle claims their G+ is taking off. Same they say with their Blogger social media. They are not taking off. They're not even on the runway! Goofle continues to erode public trust and will never, ever have a legitimate social media presence. We simple no longer trust Goofle
