Webmaster Tips On Launching A New Site In 2013

Since the existence of creatures such as panda and penguin, webmasters are more nervous and cautious about launching new web sites. They are worried that it would be almost impossible to monetize.

But there are still webmasters out there with great ideas that feel that the content and features they have thought up can overcome any Panda or Penguin and lead to monetization.

Webmasters at a WebmasterWorld thread are discussing tips on what it takes to launch a successful site in the long term in 2013.

Moderator, goodroi, Greg Niland (who I have not seen in ages), started the thread with just about 30 tips. Other webmasters then came in to add more or to add commentary or clarity on those tips. Here are some of the tips that stand out for me:

  • Minimize the use of frameworks, plugins & add-ons, they are cool today but will cause headaches tomorrow
  • Ask yourself what your new site offers that isn't already on 100 other sites
  • Expect Google rankings to be weird for your first year
  • Don't launch the site until its good enough to attract webmasters to link to it
  • Once you find the perfect domain, check to see if it was previously registered and used for spamming
  • Archive all keyword data, its going away fast
  • Launching a new site today is a much more weird process with many more anomalies than in the past

Plus many more at the thread.

So if you are thinking of launching a new site in 2013 or started working on a site, check out this thread.

Here's some more tips... If you are selling dog treats, get a domain about cats to avoid the exact match domain penalty. If you are selling dog treats, instead don't repeat that fact more than one time on the page. Basically, do your best to confuse your visitors and your new site will rank well in Google.

Very helpful thread this Barry. Some of other prerequisites before launching a new website are as mentioned. Hosting the site on a high speed server is important as it otherwise affects the page load time. The site must not be hosted on a server which is already a host for a number of spammy domains.

I don't know if I agree with the "not using a framework" for WordPress. A lot of frameworks stay on top of what Google wants to see and makes it so you don't have to continuously worry about Google's updates. I do agree that you should not use a ton of plugins or add-ons for WordPress sites. The more you can "hard code" into WordPress itself the faster the site will load/perform. This is more common sense though. As for the "Keywords are going away fast". Google has already stated that they no longer look at keyword tag meta data. They do look at your meta description though when they index your site. So although I would definitely set it up to where you tag data isn't being indexed - make sure to optimize your meta description. Your new site is definitely going to be more dependent upon social media. Make sure to have your Google + setup as well as Twitter and Facebook.
