Google Update Still Brewing From Late Last Week

Google Update BrewingOn January 9th we reported on early chatter of a Google update, which has now grown to almost 200 comments. Early on, the chatter was slow but now, over the past couple days, the chatter has grown tremendously on my post and at WebmasterWorld.

Here are some more recent comments from the thread:

10th January was a significant change date for me.

Seeing big improvements in "cleaned up sites" now ranking very high, although I can only talk of a small sample set.

I'm still seeing a lot of shuffling. I don't think it's over yet.

Panda hit site has recovered around 30%, I think this update started last thursday and filtered to this site yesterday and is ongoing.

The various tools aren't quiet but they aren't too loud right now, check them out at Mozcast, SERPs.com, SERP Metrics and Algoroo.

Do you see major changes going on at Google?

Forum discussion continued at WebmasterWorld.

JustConsumer

01/14/2014 04:18 pm

You ask the right person )) Barry Schwartz definitely knows how to copy-paste content and rank high. For example see the post above - 50% is copied. Then search for "Google Update" on Google. Barry Schwartz is presented there with another 100 words note, also mostly copied from other sources. No sources in the SERPs top, just Barry Schwartz )) Barry Schwartz is right person to ask questions about copied content )

Seen huge SERP increases after the 8th. I'd wager its Penguin related, but whatever it's been has been good to us.

01/14/2014 07:57 pm

lol I agree somewhat but what matters most is user value, does this post create user value? if it does then nobody should mind copying and pasting of content neither the user nor search engines. For me this post creates user value

Our Google organic search traffic is up quite a bit, though not as much as Bing and Yahoo traffic is. Search traffic seems better-targeted than it has been for a while, and most of our recent traffic growth seems to be in areas of the site that deserve to rank well. (Some of our evergreen pages and subdirectories that weren't getting respect before are showing traffic gains in the 100- to 300-percent range compared to the same time last month.)

01/14/2014 08:50 pm

It doesn't matter what do I find on this site. The question is what does Google find in site like yours or BuzzFeed or other feeds. Or to be more precise, the question is already not "what", but "why" and how long will it be this way ?

01/14/2014 09:49 pm

Durant your seeing more and more from BING/Yahoo than normal? I can say im seeing MUCH more hits from Yahoo/Bing across my 30+ clients and none of the rankings have changed on Yahoo/Bing (always in the top 3). Are people moving from G?? Im hopeful because month on month im seeing a small but positive increase from Yahoo/Bing

I like to think of Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines' traffic as icing on the cake. (And I prefer my cake with a lot of icing!)

JustConsumer

01/14/2014 10:20 pm

Oh Barry, common ... what do you want from me? You study web. I study web. You study it following Matt Cutts. I study it following real live examples. I see your personal blog as perfect example of Content Farm 2.0 (though I disagree with CF definitions, but this is another story) Same as BuzzFeed and some others. No reason to be rude, though probably you're upset. You'd better say me thank you and think how to escape possible downgrade by Parrot/Zebra/Donkey filter/update coming sooner or later, because no doubt Google will not tolerate Farm 2.0 for too long. Anyway, stay professional. Don't act like an upset kid )

Barry Schwartz

People still pay attention to these small-ish updates? Seems like there's one every other day now. What a headache.

osman musa

01/15/2014 01:46 am

Man Google updating stuff never ends, I guess they always have to be on top of things. They have to keep the manipulators at bay.

Allen

01/15/2014 02:39 am

Honestly, this is LAME!

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:25 am

Right Osman! Literally every week & every day we get a new update. On 11th by keywords went down and now it's seeming ranking well in search results. Quality matters, ofcourse!

osman musa

01/15/2014 04:32 am

Yeah, so far i have seen increased search traffic to my site but next week or even tomorrow it can change and go down to low visitors. Nothing surprises me anymore. If I can have a stable amount of search traffic which leads to stable Google adsense earnings, I can go to Morocco and live on a low Adsense income since Morocco is beautiful and has low cost of living LOL.

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:44 am

may be or may be not! because my few keywords are ranking up but 2 main got down! fully bullshit

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:45 am

fluctuation happening a lot.

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:47 am

that's the positive sign but should be more attentive by analyzing on a daily basis. my website: eminenture.com got affected by this and now ranking up slowly

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:48 am

right Ashish

Manoj

01/15/2014 04:59 am

but this unconfirmed is not so small! is it?

Matthew Hoff

01/15/2014 05:18 am

One of my clients is in the hotel industry, and for all 60 properties, rankings for Bing have increased dramatically across the board. Another client, in the streaming entertainment industry (not porn), has been steady with little increase. Bing may be altering their algorithm for certain verticals, but not others.

Jitendra Vaswani

01/15/2014 05:33 am

Yes there is fluctuations going on

Jitendra Vaswani

01/15/2014 05:34 am

Yes barry you are one of the Best SEO experts I admire. Your blog gives latest SEO happenings.

Adam

01/15/2014 06:07 am

I haven't seen many changes to be honest, and I'm involved in several industries and verticals. Maybe some slight fluctuations here and there with minimal damage. But that's been a weekly occurrence for the past 12 months or so. Mozcast was a 71 yesterday....pretty "meh" in my book. I'm sure people got hit, but again...that's a daily/weekly occurrence anyway.

Adam

01/15/2014 06:14 am

Hopefully you've got more tricks up your sleeve. Relying solely on Google to pay your way is a sandy foundation at best. Having it be an Adsense income only worsens the severity of the situation. =)

Ashish Ahuja

01/15/2014 08:33 am

I know this is a waste of time still need to pitch in a bit. You say barry follows Matt Cutts but Barry had for a long time protested against google policy of penalizing paid sponsored links and faced penalties which lowered the pagerank of this website (http://www.seroundtable.com/sponsored-links-12978.html) for a long time until this http://www.seroundtable.com/google-beats-me-16638.html but that shows a lot about if Barry is a Matt Cutts follower or not.

Panda recovery for me. About 30%, maybe a bit more.

Kevin Osborne

01/15/2014 05:48 pm

Dec 21 - Jan 5th experienced 30% drop and strange traffic levels with respect to the "Days of the week". Meaning, typically high traffic days were low traffic days. Just a strange traffic pattern. Then, Jan 6th to 10th traffic returned to normal levels. Jan 10th - Jan 15th back to the same weird traffic levels.

jimster

01/15/2014 08:42 pm

my search traffic more than doubled around the 8th and has been climbing ever since

Manoj

01/16/2014 06:16 am

are u getting any signs of ranking up in your keywords? might possible to get rank in same position (consuming time alot)

Manoj

01/16/2014 06:38 am

right buddy! daily basis up & down. people should be habitual of these updates. BTW, getting rank of my drop down keywords.

Jitendra Vaswani

01/16/2014 06:38 am

There is unusual stuff is going. I see drop in traffic in GA

Arpit Agarwal

01/16/2014 07:33 am

Few keyword rank has been dropped.

Johnny Foreigner

01/16/2014 10:53 am

I think it is a racist update. People with foreign sounding names have got a 30% drop and people with western sounding names got a 30% increase. Bad naughty Google :)

It's just the new year folks. My traffic is up 100% and it will fade by summer.

PM Fiorini

30% of the time my traffic is up, and 30% of the time it is down

Eemes

01/19/2014 12:25 am

Yes osman true but this time we have found out that there has been some great changes in ranking say fluctuations for the last 4 to 5 days. From Jan 15 to Jan 18. Algoroo site does show exactly the changes which we have seen. Jan 17 & Jan18 shows red color which is true. Now i have been analyzing some top keywords like "seo services" & "seo company" in google.co.in and i can find out that sites like webpro and dynasoft are coming on 1st page which for the last 3 days have been constantly fluctuating like they lose there positions but the next day they rank again, As per today's search i can find that they are back to 1st page. So for the last 4 to 5 days i am sure there has been some algo tweak for which Algoroo also shows clearly.the red flag!

01/19/2014 08:19 pm

Any ideas why this is? have you made Panda/Penguin changes lately?

Sean Murray

01/20/2014 03:16 pm

nope. I haven't done any offsite or onsite seo work to it in over a year. It has gotten some mentions and links by a few news sources and reputable companies though lately.

barry brown

01/24/2014 04:08 am

Ok. My site has been doing really good till the middle of december last year. It's been okay so far these recent days. Also, traffic seems to get up then drop then up again. So, google is updating once again. ugh!
