The big news from yesterday was that Google is updating social search to be more deeply integrated into the search result. The specifics include:
(1) Social Search results show up directly in the search results and no longer at the bottom of the search results.
(2) The results with social elements now show more comprehensive notes for links people have shared on Twitter and other sites.
(3) More controls on what you share privately and publicly.

I'm getting this now myself. I still think its nuts they are doing this without Facebook Like data. Over 44% of all online sharing is done through Facebook... I also find it humorous how bad Google is at integrating Social into its UI. This isn't nearly as bad as the "real time results" onebox, but close...

Social networking has become a huge part of time spent on the Internet, so I'm surprised they didn't do this sooner. As far as searching goes, it will be interesting to see how this affects search results and SEO.

Do you have to be logged into google to see the social results? Or do they display social results for in normal (non-personalized) organic search results?

I think this is just beginning move from Google on social search, the more advance will come, hopefully they will provide social analytic tool for analysis social connections. Now it is about challenging to develop technology to compete with Bing without core value of Facebook. I saw Google uses Facebook content from indirect connections. Thats interesting!
