Google: GoogleBot Follows Up To Five Redirects At The Same Time

redirect signGoogle's John Muller said in a webmaster hangout on Friday that GoogleBot will follow up to five redirects at the same time, past that, you are probably out of luck.

I don't believe we had a number, a solid number, on how many redirects Google will follow. This may, and I may be wrong, be the first time Google gave a number on the number of redirects they follow at one time.

We had Matt Cutts talk about PageRank dilution through redirects in the past.

Google's John Mueller said this 46 minutes and 3 seconds into the hangout embedded below:

Of course, this is useful information for SEOs when doing audits.

The old number was 2 hops and you're done. I guess they decided to crawl beyond that.

I guess the key term here is "up to". If you're an important website and the bot believes it's pursuing valuable web content, it might follow five redirects in a chain. If you're a middle-weight eCommerce site (a new brand) who can't be bothered to sort out their site architecture (links to redirects, etc.) then don't expect to receive this treatment. I doubt you'll get it :')

MC did give a clear hint in 2011 at 2:55 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA but it's a useful reminder. I encounter this issue often with clients.

Yes in this video Matt Cutts said "There is no limit per page or site, but there is a limit in the sheer number of chain of redirect hops that we are willing to follow.". If GoogleBot follows up to five redirects at the Same Time means, is it follow five redirects in a chain?

5 redirects are sufficient..

"If GoogleBot follows up to five redirects at the Same Time means, is it follow five redirects in a chain?" Probably means that if they fetch a URL and it is redirected, they will perform up to five more fetches before giving up on finding the content.
