Google Places Phone Verification Not Working

Google Phone VerificationGoogle allows most businesses to verify their business listings with phone verification process.

When I verified my business, when Google Places was actually Google Local Business Center, they did not have the phone verification method. I used the old fashion postcard method in the mail that took a couple weeks.

But now, phone verification is fast, less expensive and easier for many.

However, there seems to be a bug preventing it from working for some.

Jay from the Google Places team posted a known issue report in the Google Places Help forum saying:

Some users are facing issues with phone verification. They get an invalid PIN error even after entering the correct PIN received over the phone. We're now working on resolving this issue and the issue should be resolved soon.

There is no ETA for a fix but someone did try it out over the weekend and it still was not working.

Hey Barry For some high Risk Industries (such as Locksmith) it is not a" bug", but a deliberate action from Google's Anti spam tactic. About a week ago, as part of the yearly maps update, Google has replaced 60% of the owner verified Locksmith listings, with open ones from different local directories. Now in order to gain control on those listings,  Google wants that only businesses with a physical addresses to able to claim them back, where spammers with no physical address to be left out (eventually you need to get the 5 digits pin from the post card) What's more impressive: if you are a spammer, you can't trick Google and change the addresses while claiming the listing. Every time you're editing the address in the claiming process, you automatically get a phone verification option, which, as you mention, doesn't work. Meaning you can only verify addresses that was distribute consistently in the other local directories

Actually Google seldom allows phone verification for most businesses any more at all. They announced the change maybe 3 months ago. Occasionally if she has LOTS of trust in a listing because it's a long standing business with clean upstream data she'll offer the phone option.  But as an extra spam measure snail mail is now the predominant option offered. However the above bug is still an issue in the rare cases that phone verification is an option.

I believe what Yoni said is exactly true. This seems not to be just a simple bug out of nowhere. I suppose it is tightly connected to the endeavours of Google to stop spam, and locksmiths being one of the usual suspects. There WAS a way to always get the phone verification option (and you can't imagine how many requests I've got especially from locksmiths to help them verify by phone) but it seems not to be working anymore as well. If that's the case, then good job Google!

I'm getting the phone verification issue consistently now - happened again today on two different listings. Really tired of half assed Places support from google. I'd be happy to pay for Places listing to make the constant pain and bugs go away

Same is the case with my postings. But it is strange that now when i submit a phone number which is valid and request for a phone verification, I receive a message which say's "Your Phone number is Invalid", Maybe Jay's team is yet on work and is fixing this bug. But it is taking much longer then expected.

I have same problem with the phone verification for Google place for my site: http://www.hanoiproperty.com. First time, had a code for phone verification but the place of the website is incorrect on Google, then I made some correction, it requests confirmation by mail and did not show phone verification

I did a Google search for this issue and ran into your page. 3 businesses on my block are running into the same issue. What it appears is happening is the automated system reads the number before many iPhone users even answer their phone. So what is happening is business owners hear the last four digits and think that these are the only digits. When they type them in they get an error so they reset the process only to fail again. The automated system needs to pause for 2 seconds before spitting out the numbers. Alternatively they could repeat the verification code twice.
