My Places (Stars) On The New Google Maps Mobile

Pegman Google MapsThe new Google Maps has been available for users to try out for a while now and there is no doubt it is missing a lot of legacy features from the old Google Maps - but there are also a lot of changes to how to access some features.

One such feature is accessing your "starred locations" or "my places" in Google Maps Mobile. It is such a common question that Abby D. from Google posted a thread just on that topic in the Google Maps Help forums.

She wrote:

I'd like to share a tip with you on how to access your starred locations in the new Google Maps mobile app. To access your starred locations, go to your profile --> Saved places --> View all. Your profile is the little person icon at the top of Maps, to the right of the search bar.

Similar to how you access your starred places in the new Google Maps by clicking on your profile gear icon:

You can do so on the mobile version of Google Maps:

My Places on New Google Maps Mobile

There are some reports of places that were saved not showing up on the mobile version. Google is looking into that.

The only thing you get in Google Maps Mobile by selecting "View All" is a confusing list sorted in no apparent order. "My Maps" is nowhere to be found, and the "nearest" / "most recent" lists are totally annoying. The removal of +/- on the map makes Google Maps Mobile more distracting to use in an automobile, and that means more dangerous (pinch zoom requiring more dexterity than +/-). The newest Google Maps Mobile is the worst yet. I don't know if they decided to rewrite it with another library or in another computer language, but it is just plain annoying. Did I mention the dark gray on black "selected" coloring in place of a check box or similar UI element, understood by (and visible to) anybody?

I unfortunately was updated during a software update and now I can't find my starred places. I followed Abby's directions but only one starred place showed up followed by a bunch of places I never even mapped. It took me five min to get an address in to navigate and that was after pulling over so I didn't kill myself trying to find navigation. Searching for food and other places also seems to be gone. I have left feedback on ever place I could find. Hopefully , they will resolve the issues before I throw my phone out the window. Thanks.

I agree I'm a little frustrated with the new maps, it feels incomplete without My Maps and some of the other legacy features. One thing I found though is that you can tap with two fingers to zoom out. A little easier than pinching when you're trying to focus on other things.

You can double tap, then hold down your finger on the second tap, then move your finger up or down the screen to zoom in and out,

Thanks for the explanation, which might explain what seemed like a[nother] bug - sometimes I've noticed the screen zooming when I want to drag - the [too] clever feature you describe may have interpreted something I did as a double tap + zoom. If so, this is way too sensitive on my Samsung Note II. It zooms way in just because I touch the "here" circle, then zooms when it thinks I've done a double tap. + and - are SO much easier, if not as clever.

I am so angry at Google for removing My Maps. I DID try the new Google Maps Engine. It doesn't work. I made a map with it. Then, on my android, google maps engine reports "no maps found" I wish Apple would figure out this use case: In advance of going somewhere, I want to create 5 pushpins on places of interest, and add notes to those pushpins. It's such a SIMPLE use case. Google's My maps allowed that. I went to using Android after their Maps fiasco. Now Google has pulled an Apple.

when will this guys allow me to mark places and add personal notes with different icons and not just the plain star.... don't they figure people also need a private and practical aproach to their favorite places?

Aside from the isues surrpunding the maps function. How many people are there out there like these in the comments section that inssit on using handheld mobile devices at the wheel whilst moving? YOU WILL KILL SOMEONE. If you are driving then do that as it requires you to see what's ahead, constantly. Pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users get killed because people take their eyes off the road for those 2-3 seconds.

Get off your high horse. This helps prevent accidents because all your spots on a trip are ready to go with one push of a button. You can do it when parked.

Hey, my question clearly wasn't directed at people who use this whilst parked.

I want "My Maps" back!!!! WTF Google! Why would you change something that worked great. They should have never revamped Google Maps, it is half the App it used to be. It's a Jillion step process. Who thinks these changes through??? and how are they better then they were before? I mean come on, seriously what are you guys doing? Also, I don't know if anyone else has noticed that Google has taken away the Lab which allowed you to send people SMS messages through Google Chat. Again, wtf, no explanation as to why, or that it was happening. I used that feature a lot at work, because I don't have cell phone reception in my office. Google, I'm losing faith in your ingenuity!.

The new Google Maps is very disappointing. The new version takes away many useful features and adds useless ones. I really relied heavily on the My Maps function, and now that is totally missing from the new Maps for mobile. What was Google thinking? Also, it is much more of a pain to store my past Navigation routes. Google managed to take one of the best mapping and navigation apps and completely ruin it.
