Google sent out emails to many of their customers and publishers telling them this year they are giving a $40 million charitable donation for the holiday gift.
They started giving charity as a gift in 2009, which did upset people who were use to receiving shwag and cool gifts from Google in the previous years, like they did in 2008, 2007, 2006, and 2005.
Here is a picture of the email sent to me:

This leads to a page at google.com/intl/en/landing/givesback/2011 which everyone can see.
Happy Holidays to everyone and thanks Google.

I wonder if any other really big companies are donating for charity like this as well. Also I like googles summer of code. Many great things have been done thanks to them.

Google is a BUSINESS that generates $38 billion a year. Giving $40 million or how much they paid ONE engineer not to go to Twitter it's smart business. Have you looked at SERPs lately with 4-5 ads that are identical to content on top, local, news, images etc etc as our content is pushed to where it barely gets a small % of total clicks? Google is fooling webmasters and the world with tricks, as they try to keep all clicks to ads and Google services. Wake up or you will go bankrupt. Google is ripping everyone off.

This reminds me of Seinfeld Costanza's human fund. Shouldn't a multi-billion company already be donating money to good causes? Can I get the tax write off for my share of the donation? Pretty weak from the biggest search engine in the world. Even the small businesses I deal with donate money and still ponied up some dough to send an actual holiday card and not a "FREE" email.
