Google February Update Starting? Hold On.

Google Update BrewingI am seeing a nice number of reports that signal the onset of a Google update being rolled out.

There are reports in the ongoing WebmasterWorld thread and tons and tons of threads in Google Webmaster Tools from webmasters claiming their sites no longer rank in Google. I just linked to several of them, but there are plenty more.

What I found interesting is that there are two threads from a couple days ago with similar complaints. In those threads, Googler Gary Illyes responded that he will look into it. He wrote:

Thanks for letting us know about the problem with your site. I let the engineers know about the issue and they're going to take a look.

He did not respond that the site has issues or that Google fluctuates or that Google has algorithms that look for quality content. He responded that he will let the engineers look at this issues.

Is this related? I don't think so.

Most of the chatter I am seeing about an update comes from sometime this morning throughout right now.

A WebmasterWorld has a preferred member saying, "Seeing some significant changes today."

Is an update about to be announced by Google? Is it Penguin, Panda or something else? I'll keep you posted on what I find.

The last official Google update confirmed by Google was Panda #24 on January 22nd.

Gosh I hope this is an update that helps us dearly, we revoked penalty end of November and still have not been fully indexed. All links de-valued and sitting 20+ pages in SERP's, anyone know of any tricks to get our site back into SERP's or just time? Thanks :)

There is an update every day, a bit bigger every week and something major every few months. Generally this doesn't change many things in online marketing and SEO strategy!

I haven't noticed any flux outside of the ordinary. I'll keep an eye on it.

It's like they're doing experiments on live patients with these updates. We don't seem to be adversely affected though.

I don't see anything major that would lead me to suspect an algo update happened. Just the normal movement. Not much chatter elsewhere either. Might be a time-based expiration of some manual penalties if its isolated to just some sites.

All of the rankings for one of our sites completely disappeared from Google for no apparent reason when we checked on Sunday evening, whereas the same site was ranked on the 2nd and 3rd pages of results the previous Thursday (2/7). Then when checked again this morning, the rankings were back except a couple of keywords had moved down to into the 100's in terms of rankings... never seen this before in 10 years.

02/13/2013 10:45 am

We are seeing significant changes(positive) in SERP's of our keywords.

02/13/2013 12:40 pm

I noticed that too - all 'Links to Your Site' have now returned (in Webmaster Tools). I actually thought that Google may have started to pick and choose quality links only and that was a Penguin update...

Jimmy Maddox

02/13/2013 03:43 pm

pages linked to my site was 7,398 2 weeks ago and had been that way for some time. Then overnight it dropped to only 36. It stayed that way for about 6 days and the just yestruday the page link count went back to 7,398. My Website went from a PR-1 to a PR-2 in in November last year. Then it droppe to PR-1 just 3 months later for no rhyme or reason. I've pretty much given up trying to let my guard down on Google.

02/13/2013 04:20 pm

Well its good that google update the database and they will clean the useless results from there pages and only good and better results come on that page.

I saw this as well. Any ideas of why this happened? A client site had some links that weren't showing up, and their rankings jumped. As soon as the links returned with the next index, the rankings dropped to their previous position.

It is good that Google shuffles it's results due to periodic algorithmic improvements. I have seen shifts this month, but likewise you could argue that I found this article as a result of a tweak to the algorithm, and that otherwise I would have looked elsewhere. Good quality content will always shine through, hopefully.

IT was a unannounced Panda Update, I have seen huge drop similar to panda update on 2 of our sites

There is almost 1.1% change with the English results on 12th Feb'13. Which means a LOT of changes have happened with this update. Hoping to see more of such updates soon.....
