Can You Rank In Google Without Content?

empty newspaperA WebmasterWorld thread has a webmaster who has a site that doesn't have any real content. It is basically statistical downloads and specifications downloadable as PDFs or Zip files.

Can you rank web pages with no content at all in Google?

A good example of a page that ranks without having the exact words on it is the Adobe Reader page which ranks for [click here].

But what about a page with almost no content? It is possible to rank on anchor text alone?

Yes, but it has to be very obscure and non-competitive words.

The WebmasterWorld thread has netmeg adding:

Some sites just aren't meant for search engines.

No sure about now, but i had sent you a mail 2 years back i guess about a page ranking for very highly competitive keyword "make money online" i think and it was ranking only because of title and no content at all on the page, But huge amount of quality backlinks. Let me check if i have that mail with me :)

Yes you can rank a site number one for a competitive keyphrase by 100% framing another website, so the ranking website has zero content itself. Ill post the link if I am given permission!

I see blank pages in the search results all the time.

Same here - most of them are "question and answer" sites similar to Yahoo Answers. However, these pages showing up are just a question with no answers (yet...or, ever) and tons of AdWords blocks. Somehow, they still magically appear at the top of Google for question-related queries. So much for Google's self proclaimed quality.

I must admit I've seen a large number of websites ranking with no content on them, but usually that's due to the spammy backlinking behind the websites doing that for it. Not ideal but possible.

ranking with no actual content? that's easy - just type in a phone number and you'll see millions of results.

There's quite a few instances when a site can rank without content, but I think it'll either be because of the strength of the domain - Adobe clearly being a strong one - and also if the site has purely black-hatted its way to the top - in which case it'll only be a matter of time before it slips back down.

I've seen Flash sites with zero actual content rank for decently competitive keywords, so it can be done.

Yea, you don't need content on the page to tell Google what the page is about. Offsite links can tell Google what a page is about.

Uffff, I see every day pages with no content or pages with only a question and no answers, nada, zero content, ranking on 1st page on Google, they mostly appear when I searching on my phone. It is a terrible UX.

Can a site rank with no content? How dare you ask this question??? Come on, Google is now so smart, improved and fast that sites that dont truly exist now are enjoying first position in search results. Just google "glitter sparkle wallpapers". The first site called pirates image that the search engine shows is dead. Plz plz demand Sweden to honor Google employees including his Highness Matt Cutts with noble prize.
