Yahoo Site Explorer Link Count Drops Significantly

Several webmasters and SEOs are reporting that the link reports in Yahoo Site Explorer is reporting drastically less links than ever before. I assume this is not being discussed as much as it would have been a year or two ago, simply cause Yahoo is out of search but some webmasters and SEOs are concerned over the major link drop.

I personally checked my January 2009 screen shot and compared it to today and I noticed a drop of over 100,000 links! Here is a before and after screen shot.

Today:

Yahoo Site Explorer Link Drop

In January 2009:

Yahoo Site Explorer Links

A Search Engine Watch Forums thread has a post about this drop, as well as some tweets.

@rustybrick Do u have any theories on why people are seeing lots of link loss in Yahoo SiteExplorer? I saw you covered this topic...less than a minute ago via HootSuite

Noticing a significant drop in link counts in Yahoo's Site Explorer for the "link:" - "except from this domain" option. Anyone?less than a minute ago via Echofon

Seeing a big drop in number of backlinks reported by Yahoo Site Explorer. Anyone else?less than a minute ago via Echofon

Did you notice a major drop?

Update May 23, 2010: Seems like most of the links lost are now back.

It is odd -- a handful of our clients lost significant links, but not all of them did. I assumed they were just overlooked in link building -- is anyone else seeing this for some clients and not others?

Saw that drop for most of the sites I'm monitoring early this week. Kind of a big drop in some case. Wonder what happened, maybe will get some answer with Linkscape data. Good that you bringing that up

Their are major fluctuations on Yahoo Site Explorer on a daily basis. My guess is that it's data center related. I've seen drops and surges of 100,000+ links in month over month comparisons many times.

I lost 75%

Yes, there are fluctuations. Sometimes Inlinks disappear, then come back. And these problems are transferred to tools that use that data.

Yes I am seeing a massive reduction in incoming links for various of my clients. Not only the incoming links I am also noticing a massive change in page saturation in Google and Yahoo.

Or it could simply means the partnership with microsoft has had an impact on the algo which consider the link and they now don't count all the links as valid (I.e JavaScript or nofollow links)

Not so much concerned as there was no loss of rankings, implying Y's doing an overall clean up of <technical term> crappy links </technical term> across the board. But glad to see your story on it and others noticing the same. Thx for using my inquiry! :O)

Interesting that they also dropped a huge number of pages from the index - any ideas what the pages were?

No idea, sorry.

I am now blocking Yahoo!'s crawler on my forums. The rest of my network will start blocking Slurp at the end of the month. Yahoo! is no longer relevant to search (and those bloated link counts weren't relevant to SEO anyway, so why is everyone crying over missing ghost links?).

Seeing the vast amount of links i've lost better post something here to try and gain another link! Seriously tho it is a mystery not only happening with inlinks but pages are dissapearing too!

I lost nearly have my backlinks as well. Even backlinks that come from other websites I own so i know they are still valid!

My opinion is that Yahoo has simply gone the route of Google and just isn't showing many of the links anymore. It's not that they aren't counting them, it's that they aren't showing them.

There is definitely something still wrong, I just lost 7 links which I just gained today?? Yahoo tends to show links relatively fast compared to say google which does not and is unreliable and never updates anything. Whats going on with these search engines ??

I not only lost links but 7 pages are off site explore. No red flags, missing pages are there and working just fine. Over night lost 7 pages and 700 backlinks. not happy

75-80% loss for myself and several clients. Thanks for covering the story...good to know it's across the board...though apparently staggered in time.

I think they are phasing out the explorer and phasing out the memory it takes to hold the data.
