Olga Ladyzhenskaya Google Logo

Today on Google's home page is a special Doodle, Google logo, to remember the life of the Russian mathematician Olga Ladyzhenskaya. She was most well known for her work on partial differential equations and fluid dynamics. The Doodle was posted on her 97th birthday - she passed at the age of 81 on January 12, 2004.

She was born on March 7, 1922 in Kologriv, Russia. Her father was executed as an "enemy of state" back in 1937. She had a really rough time getting into good schools in Russia because of her family name. But in 1943 she was admitted to Moscow University and worked under Ivan Petrovsky where she earned her PhD.

She provided the first "rigorous proofs of the convergence of a finite difference method for the Navier–Stokes equations" according to Wikipedia.
