Mark Scully

This is part of the say something nice about an SEO/SEM series - feel free to nominate someone over here.

Mark Scully is 33 and lives in Dublin, Ireland - he is originally from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland where his dad runs a little farm.

Mark runs a conference named Learn Inbound which is a pretty large conference that covers SEO, analytics, PPC and more. Like I have said here time and time again, conferences is a huge way to give back to the community. Putting conferences together is not easy, and I wouldn't even consider it fun - but it has so many benefits to everyone who partakes in them. The networking, learnings and friendships you make at these events are some of the best ways to build your career and get better at what you do. Mark is one of the few who facilitate this.

He is also a pretty good SEO if you ask around the community.

Gustavo Pelogia nominated Mark and wrote:

Mark has been running Learn Inbound (a digital marketing conference) on his shoulders for over three years now. On top of running a business and being an avid SEO, I've never seen someone so worried about every detail and giving up days and nights to make sure his audience and speakers would have a great experience in Dublin.

Ask any SEO/SEM who ever flew to Dublin and I'm positive you'll hear great things about his person.

Mark will give attention to any marketer who asks for an advice, share his time to try helping that person the same way he will treat speakers and honestly often leaving his own interest behind.

Disclaimer: I do work with Mark at Learn Inbound. However, even when I flew to Dublin for the first time to attend the event, I was well treated and impressed. I can say that he played an important support role when I decided to move to Ireland and pursuit an SEO career here. All that I wrote above is from watching how he works over the last one and half year.

Mark Scully Bio: Mark is an experienced freelance SEO consultant and co-founder of Learn Inbound, a training company responsible for organizing the largest Inbound Marketing event in Ireland. He’s on a mission to help marketers improve their knowledge of inbound marketing by working with leading experts to share actionable tips, tactics, and strategies at a series of events and training courses in Ireland. Over the past three years, he has built Learn Inbound into an internationally renowned conference attended by more than 2,000 marketers from over 25 countries. When not geeking out about inbound marketing, you’ll find him getting hopelessly lost in Dublin as he goes in search of the best coffee and pizza the city has to offer.

Favorite thing about the SEM community? I continue to be amazed by how open people are to helping out others who are relatively new to the industry. The people I’ve built friendships with over the past couple of years have came about through interactions on Twitter, discussion forums and at marketing events. Egos are generally left at the door as most people are open to passing on the knowledge they’ve built up throughout their career. I don’t think my career could have progressed past the point I was at when I started if it wasn’t for the warmth and support of others when I needed it. I’ll always be thankful for each person who has taken time out of their day to help me.

One piece of advice to the SEMs out there? Never stop learning. It might be overwhelming for anyone starting now in SEO, but in truth, all SEO experts you read about are there because they consistently invest time into their personal development.

You owe it to yourself and your clients to keep on top of your game. So, keep your ego in check, be kind to others and enjoy the journey. It’s an exciting industry to be a part of.

Favorite things in general? I’m a big fan of retro gaming, comic book movies and searching for the best coffee (I’m a total coffee snob). I’m allergic to anything related to sports so if you want to get rid of me, start a conversation around football. I’ll be nothing but a dust trail before you make it to your second sentence.

What you want to be known for in the SEM space? I’d like to be known for building a warm and engaging community of digital marketers where egos are left at the door and the focus is on supporting one another. Learning and networking with industry peers is what helps any digital marketer go from ‘good’ to ‘great’, so if I can help support that, I’ll be proud of the work I’m doing.
