Google Carter G Woodson

Today on Google's home page in the United States for the kick off of Black History Month, Google remembers Carter G. Woodson. Carter G. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study African-American history. He was born on December 19, 1875, so his birthday was not on February 1st, just to be clear, and he passed on April 3, 1950 at the age of 74.

He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and The Journal of Negro History in 1915. He is known as the "father of black history" and he came up with the "Negro History Week," which was what came before Black History Month.

Carter Woodson was the son of former slaves, James and Eliza Riddle Woodson. He himself went to some really good schools including Berea College for his BLitt, University of Chicago for his BA and MA and Harvard University for his PhD.

Google said the Doodle was designed by Virginia-based illustrator Shannon Wright and developed in collaboration with the Black Googlers Network.

You can read more about the Doodle over here and his life there and on Wikipedia.
