Reputation of SEOs Challenged -- Again

Feb 6, 2008 - 9:19 am 4 by

Danny Sullivan has written a long piece at Search Engine Land about how SEO is consistently being challenged as an unethical practice. This month, a BusinessWeek article starts trigger, claiming that his SEO experience was not a good one and his $5,000 went down the drain.

After that, Shoemoney said that he didn't like 95% of SEO experts.

One of the more recent events was when Andy Baio called out Sitelynx as an SEO spamming social media sites. The story gained a lot of momentum and had a lot of news coverage.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that SEO is a disputed practice yet again.

The discussion moves over to Sphinn where many people again support Danny and his frustration.

Wow, Every once in a While Danny does these long posts yet Great Posts. Too many Bad Mouth for SEO, but we know what is good and what works, In the begining it was little upsetting but Now, I learned to kee ignoring those Bad mouth.

And will it really kill business? Probably not.

Here's what you have to ask yourself if you're a search marketer: Will any of these "bad press" incidents affect your ability to land new accounts? Probably not. In my experience as an agency SEO, most clients range from slightly "in the now" about the industry to utter and complete "newbies" that come from the offline marketing wolrd. In other words, they don't read shoemoney.

Any industry is like this, though, if you think about it:

Whether it be plumbers, garages, builders - you're always going to get cowboys who muddy the water but at the end of the day, if you can't fix a boiler or service your own car your gonna need to call a guy who can...No different for our industry.

So what do you think? Forum discussion continues at Sphinn.
