Google Takes a Stab at Microsoft with Mobile OS

Yesterday, Google announced the Open Handset Alliance: open source mobile software.

WebmasterWorld reaction is mixed. Some feel that Microsoft is threatened, whereas others think that the average consumer will probably not opt in for Google's mobile operating system because they will not understand the value of it. However, since Google is trying to increase the reach of its brand, this could potentially help them, especially since Microsoft is the predominant operating system of choice on many smartphones.

Another interesting part of this is that Google already has a tremendous amount of information about you. Extending its reach to the mobile world could be quite interesting. Will Google own your information if you've gone mobile? I wonder how that will play out.

What are your thoughts about the Open Handset Alliance? Forum discussion continues at WebmasterWorld.
