Is Google Search Updating? January 8th & 9th

Jan 9, 2014 • 8:53 am | comments (250) by twitter Google+ | Filed Under Google PageRank & Algorithm Updates

google updating logoI am seeing early signs of a possible Google update underway today. The WebmasterWorld thread started to get some chatter yesterday of people noticing shifts in the search results.

One WebmasterWorld senior member said, "Jez, something without doubt is happening. We've seen all the tell tale signs."

Most of the tools that track these updates are not currently updated for today. DigitalPoint (see sidebar) and Algoroo are and show signs of an update:

Algoroo Jan 8th DigitalPoint Jan 8th

Another WebmasterWorld member said:

Is something brewing? I am getting a lot of foreign visitors hitting my site. Usually a sign of something in my recent experience. We are probably due a Penguin refresh perhaps.

Have you noticed major changes in your rankings and Google referrals yesterday?

Nothing happening.

Nothing obvious here on the Google front, although I'm seeing less of a dramatic increase in Google traffic than I am in traffic from most other sources, including Bing/Yahoo. (For our topic, there's always a surge in traffic after New Year's.).

I run the SEO on a UK national "cladding cleaning" website. Results have recently tanked and I lost the client today. However I tried to explain that G is broken and if you type in "cladding cleaning TARGET AREA" The only results you get are "window" cleaners, cladding is a specific metal sheet and nothing to do with Glass. G highlights the word WINDOW as it seems to think its the same. Anyway to alert G about this error, its been since hummingbird?

There's definitely an update coming, my site's organic traffic reached high levels compared to any other day. Today it seems like there's barely any Google traffic and on the same searches now I see a lot of social activity Google + showing up as well. A really good site that's FREE that i came across is fruition.net It will tell you about the updates Google is making and also show you if your site has been positive effected or negative from algorithm updates. Keeping my fingers crossed this improves our rankings on our website since it was hit with hummingbird we removed over 1000+ backlinks in hope to get our SERps back. Goodluck to all

JustAnnoyed

01/09/2014 09:03 pm

Sorry Barry but I've researched for something solid and nothing out there. I checked many websites and nothing special is going on. The post you are referring to started by a guy that didn't even bother to check if he got penalized. cheating headlines again. why are you even considering this algoroo as a legitimate example? The other tools out there are much more reliable and consistent.

The new Google algorithm update has definitely increased our search engine positions on a few of our sites. People who continue to build back links from same IP are only digging themselves deeper. Don't keep using the same strategy if it hasn't yet worked.

SuperDad

01/11/2014 05:03 am

Multiple sites. All home-based business related. All gone. No idea why. Some are updated regularly. Some I haven't put new content on in over a year, but all disappeared same day. Webmaster tools shows no penalties. Giving me a headache trying to figure out the cause.

Dino Pizza

01/11/2014 05:05 am

I paid some guy 5 dollars on Fiverr for some backlinks, I wonder if they were the cause? I also have nothing in Google webmaster tools. I hope it picks up and realigns within 24 hours?

John Britsios

01/11/2014 05:18 am

$5 on Fiverr for links? Well, if this was sort of Penguin update, then you have a problem.

Dino Pizza

01/11/2014 05:24 am

I have no answers, only questions

John Britsios

01/11/2014 05:24 am

I only recall a possible quality algo update around the 25th of October 2013, which was not confirmed from Google.

WebAlert

01/11/2014 06:03 am

@Dino Pizza. I think that the recent update had something to do with Penguin and so it would have targeted your above-mentioned Website - backlink profile. From the look of your backlinks, you have a lot of directory links which I have seen in Google Webmaster forum is not a good thing. Also your homepage has hardly any text content. Seems like it's setup as a sort of location finder like yellow pages...maybe some duplicate content. Just my 2 cents to help.

Dino Pizza

01/11/2014 06:06 am

Thanks mate, yes that looks moreso to be the case. Not sure where to take it from here, but I have lost about 6 months work. We combined information from various sources to improve user experience like address, reviews and links to yelp etc. Will Google deliver us an email or something to our webmaster tools?

WebAlert

01/11/2014 06:15 am

It was somewhere around 4th October, I think.

Our SEO team noticed a huge spike in GWT Search Queries (impressions) specifically on January 1st, 2014. It's not a tiny spike, it's triple, quadrupal, and even 10X more impressions on roughly 8 of our SEO clients. We changed up our Citations strategies a bit and always run an SEO sweep to fix technical errors, but we didn't do all that at the same time...in fact we took New Years Day off. Any thoughts? I'd like to report the good news to our clients with a cause.

Same thing happened to me. My entire site is suddenly practically invisible in the serps unless I search for an extremely precise longtail phrase or use the site: parameter. Otherwise I'm just getting tons of results consisting of my own social media posts and other sites summarizing/citing my articles. Hopefully it's some sort of temporary hiccup or we'll get a WMT notification.

Catalin Nichita

01/11/2014 12:14 pm

Michael

01/12/2014 07:49 am

We had been hit with hummingbird back, never received manual spam letter but our site was moved so far back on search engine that even if you typed its name it wuldnt show up first. That's how fever penalty we got . Every since we been removing many unnatural low quality spam links that paid services put up. After we removed over 1000+ backlinks , the past 3 days out article positions in search engine are moving closer to second page , when before we lost all traffic cause our posts were back 10+ pages . Past 3 days our site has increased in organic google traffic. Skyrocketed since 9th , even for the weekend we didn't get traffic like this back then before hummingbird. We started increasing our google +1 on our site and likes by the hundreds daily in hope to increase rankings through social seo. Not sure if this had anything to do with it, doubt it even though we got over 1k google+1 on our site and over 2k fb likes. Pretty much deleted all backlinks I ever created or service did , google penalizes same IP backlinks. I also quit making backlinks and started writing more.

Michael

01/12/2014 07:54 am

The social likes and google plus were increased by that amount in a week. We really pushed the social seo up.

I don't understand how you want to rank with lyrics sites... This content (lyrics) appear on other 100000 sites. You have also a lot of spam tags...

Catalin Nichita

01/12/2014 10:45 am

It's not so simple. If you have a website with low quality signals (copied content, bad links) these new coming links (usually 100000 links coming in two days) will sink your site for sure. I suggest you to disavow all these links (take the fiverr report and disavow them). If you have also copied content, you can forget about this website, it's better to make another one, from zero.

SAJID

01/12/2014 12:10 pm

Wao... Thats gonna be a wonderful update... My traffic rose about 250% from last few days on http://techguru3d.com .. Wao its doing wonders..

Dino Pizza

01/12/2014 12:40 pm

Well for copied content, the strategy was pulling data from multiple sources to give the user a better experience. So copied, sure, but through an API. Ok, Ill get rid of these links.

Catalin Nichita

01/12/2014 01:09 pm

Better experience without original content? Google don't want this thing. You have two problems: unoriginal content and low quality links. PS: I am amazed that you think you will rank with that content. This is against Google rules, even you mix content from multiple sources.

Dino Pizza

01/12/2014 01:12 pm

No, it's not against Google rules, unless you can show me this. Our website offers many benefits to users. I have disavowed all links bad. We will see what happens.

I am in Australia and yes there is an update with limited application. Most clients stayed put or moved up, but 2 significant movements. One entertainment site displaced by a site that that went from several pages back to #1 for a website that hasn't changed since 2011 - now its first place in both organics and Google Places. Other client has 10 ecommerce sites targeting different business products most were back on page 3 - 5 - now suddenly have gone front page, one went to #1 and another #2 for money keyword. Sites unchanged in years as owners personal circumstance has changed, they run Joomla 1.5 which is years out of date and still go top. ???

My website ranking goes down for many keywords...... http://movesmartmoving.com/ @webspamhunter:disqus can you please tell the issues my website has !

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:11 am

In your case the site does not have too many authoritative links, so the site authority is low which may be causing the downward movement. This I found on a cursory glace, there may be other issues involved.

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:16 am

lots of low quality, irrelevant, no follow blog comment links, give scrapebox a rest and then maybe google will like your site better.

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:20 am

low quality unreadable content on many posts, looks like an autoblog, can you understand this page http://www.designoffurniture.com/garden-and-landscape/flooring/how-to-install-ceramic-tiles/ Also, go a little slow on the internal links and try not to automate them

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:25 am

When the site PR remains 0 even after the latest google update, its the first sign that google does not like something about your site. also, most of the content is also found on another site, don't know if you are copying its content or vice versa

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:27 am

There are various ways but the best is creating excellent link worthy content and promoting it on all sources where people are talking about your niche like forums, social media etc. and people would link to it naturally

01/13/2014 06:29 am

I would not break any news to my client based on WMT data, it is sometimes very fickle, unless you see increase in traffic or rankings

Ashish Ahuja

01/13/2014 06:39 am

if its an alogrithmic update, which it looks like, then you would not get any WMT notification. That is only for manual penalties

For the last three days my traffic has spiked 60% (Jan 10-11-12) Keywords on Page 2 jumped to page 1. Keywords on Page 6 went to Pages 2 or 3 I would love to get my hopes up but the same thing happened to me @ the end of November 2013 and then they dropped back down. I'm hoping the changes stick this time I need the money and my site is very labor intensive so it isn't worth keeping it updated unless its making decent money.

on this page I mentioned above there are two internal links and that is there on most of the pages. Internal links are good for seo if done manually, these links look like being done for seo purposes only and does not add any value to the reader.

Yeah I probably tripped something. I have a feeling it's related to a recent domain name change. I used the site move tool, but now WMT is reporting all the internal links from the old domain as external links to the new one. Hopefully it will gradually sort itself out as the 301s get crawled/indexed.

I had a drop of like 65% since 10th January. I used to post articles daily on my blog, however, prior to 10th January, i was posting much less. Anyway, im not sure about the cause, the traffic had a drop for 4 days; but today, it seems like that the traffic will increase by a few 100 extra views as compared to yesterday. Btw, my blog used to get an average of 6500+ views per day, and it has dropped to like 2500 views per day. Any ideas? i think i just have to be more active like i was previously? here is my blog - www.droidcrave.com

James

01/14/2014 06:50 pm

There is something odd about the traffic. In October/November there was an increase on some websites. In January all those gains are gone from them. It is as if the January update was a rollback to November. Anyone else see this as a rollback to November? As for unnatural back-links. If this was true it would be very easy for me to take my competition to the cleaners by building them loads of crappy backlinks for them. On another note to Google. In November I had IP1 with your boost because of the website I had to upgrade the account in December so now I have IP2. Now that the spurt of traffic is gone I have to downgrade the account again with a new IP3. Come month end your 'algo' will tell me that my IP has changed 3 times in 4 months so I must be a spammer. You create more problems than you are worth. I pray someone decent comes around and provides proper search traffic and not create more problems than what we had before.

Ashish Ahuja

01/14/2014 07:51 pm

I don't see and onsite of offsite issue on the site i.e. the links look ok (they are very few and not authoritative) and the content looks original but the site is small and not authoritative with only 193 pages indexed so if you don't believe in backlinking then keep adding content and engage in content marketing with like minded bloggers and social media and you would start seeing results when the activity starts growing around the site

Vishal Bohara

And Google is not indexing my new blog's post... ? Why

Nimi

01/15/2014 04:43 am

Seems its a Strategy at Google, when Matt Need more money they start tweaking algos. They start moving Search Results up and down, in order to ask website to spend money in PPC. End of the day game remains same, some website rank above and some go down, finally its Google who hide under the skin of "Google Algo Update". Unfortunately, Google support all kind of black hat guys!

Google wants to hurt many people and make them go negative way, it helps their purpose. I have an analogy for this as well which is used by police in cities which has lots of gangs, they just pitch one gang against other and they fight within themselves and reduce the no of goons and when there are little left the police cleans the rest. This is what google is doing now pitting webmasters against each other

Very true and I have noticed it on Google product forums. You have webmaster against webmaster accusing them of all kinds of things. The authorship game they have going is in my view all about promoting their Google Plus product. Look at some of the authors who get to keep their pictures. They push Google Plus. This is not about quality search it is about making more money for Google by promoting their failed product "Plus".

James

01/16/2014 06:09 am

Yes, well said. Did you notice how after Panda you could not find things on the internet any longer? The good quality content sunk so you started to click more on adverts. :) Brilliant observation!

01/16/2014 09:27 am

Hi Ashish, can you help me find out why my blog http://www.layerform.com has dropped massively in traffic? In December i was averaging 200 uniques a day, and from the 10th Jan my organic traffic has dropped from 100 to 5 visitors a day from google. Ashish Ahuja

01/16/2014 09:43 am

it looks like you lost lots of link in last 1 month and the site has high nofollow to dofollow ratio which is mostly due to blog comments and google sometimes consider this as blog comment spam. This is what I could find in first glance, there may be onsite issues which I have not looked into

Oral Seymour

01/16/2014 04:14 pm

Any thoughts on the following scenario involving three sites of mine that I had build around August/Sept 2013 and decimated on January 8-9 appreciated. They were all very well written sites I did by hand with unique/fresh content. Sites A & B ranked number 1 for primary search term. They also ranked number one or on the front page of numerous other secondary and long tail keywords. Site A is still ranked on the front page of google around 5 or 6 with most other pages falling off onto second page or worse. Site B is still ranked number 1 overall on Google for this keyword with most other pages falling off onto second page of Google or worse. Site C ranked number three on google for primary keyword and ranked highly on many other pages. Now it ranks around 15 overall for primary keyword and fallen off the map for many others. Does this sound like a Penguin hit? I thought Penguin would basically take out my entire site. Here I have three sites that are still ranking rather well for primary keyword. Is this indicative of Penguin? Without question my sites were hit during this time period. What is your assessment and would you continue to invest time and energy into these sites? Do you think I need to spend more time focusing on linking to inner pages or is it a lost cause? Thank you.

Nick Ker

01/16/2014 04:23 pm

Rankings fluctuate for a huge variety of reasons - not just links. And not every change in the SERPs is due to a penalty. While nobody can really tell for sure if this is due to Penguin without looking at the sites and the links to them, I can tell you that you should spend less time worrying about penguin and links, and more time focusing on giving people good reasons to link to your sites. What I mean is this - you ask if you should spend more time focusing on linking to inner pages. You shouldn't be the one doing the linking. Other webmasters should be doing that, ideally without you telling them what you'd like them to do. So if you do have a lot of links that you decided where they point, what they say, etc - then you probably do have some type of link-based problem. Now, if you meant "should I spend more time making the inner pages more link-worthy?", the answer is yes.

Nick Ker

01/16/2014 04:27 pm

There was a change in Webmaster Tools on December 31st or Jan 1st. The way they present search queries is supposedly more precise now. Most people saw some type of change in that graph around that time. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2014/01/search-queries-not-rounded.html

Yawn......this type is of reasoning is so tiresome.........you have no idea what affects what much like the rest of us. Google does not even know what the impacts of their changes will do, that's why we are the guinea pigs. Your comment is very Matt Cutts-esqe......news flash, his goal is not to help the public make money off free traffic. It is to reveal the little guys so they can be cut from the SERPS and the large entities which fuel adwords can take their place.

zero

01/17/2014 10:30 am

Dino Pizza

01/19/2014 06:23 am

dondeal

01/19/2014 07:04 pm

I'm starting to see my traffic improve slowly. I fixed some 500 errors (due to my code), but these errors only affected less than 0.01% of my total pages. I also removed all affiliate links from my site which cut daily income by 60%, but it's worth it if my traffic returns to normal. I decreased a lot of the css paddings to bring more content above the fold, just in case the site was hit with a not enough content above the fold penalty. This update decreased my income by more than $12k a month and a thorough analysis has been done in order to get this traffic back. I hope my analysis can help others who seriously depend on their sites monetarily.

Daniel Delos

01/21/2014 04:09 pm

Just describing traffic patterns tells us almost nothing but the SERP losses you described isn't a lost cause. It's also not clear in every case if it was a penalty on the site or just heavy devaluing of some of the links that used to be helping. But from the date of the losses and the fact that it hit 3 of your sites at once, it's clearly not due to an existing Penguin update unless you blasted all 3 sites with the same links at the same time... It's something new. Whether or not they call it "Penguin 2.2" is beside the point since every Penguin update is unique (not the same as a "refresh"). Until people get more evidence on this, all you can know is that whatever link building you were doing was not ideal.

Lilia Tovbin

01/21/2014 08:13 pm

Just look at the sites that now rank above you for the keywords/phrases you used to rank higher - note how their pages are different from yours then draw your own conclusions. Generic rules and advice don't always apply, you are better off doing your own work.

Lilia Tovbin

01/21/2014 08:17 pm

I am not sure I like the analogy with gangs, because someone's loss is also someone's gain - signs point to official sites with less ads being the winners on this most recent update. But you can also think of it this way - if large commercial sites are loosing rankings they just MIGHT spend more on AdWords to make up for losses on organic results. That would be a brilliant business strategy, wouldn't it?

Steven Robinson

01/22/2014 04:44 am

All the ranking we gathered on jan 9th-10th seem to be sinking , the site which sank down on 9th itself is again back on track .

Ashish Ahuja

01/22/2014 07:48 am

I agree that making commercial sites move to adwords would be a brilliant strategy, but google can only create anarchy, the result of that would depend on each individual choice. Some may move to adwords other may move to negative seo.

I am seeing a sudden shift in google search engine ranking. I run many websites. I track 1000's keywords everyday. Why are rankings changing so rapidly?

Anwesha Bose

01/24/2014 10:24 am

I can see that the discussion has sort of died down, but it is absolutely harassing to see such sudden changes. Pages as old as two years with absolutely irrelevant information are hitting on top in the search and pages with actual and updated info gone down to as many as four to five pages. What is Google trying to do?

Anwesha Bose

01/24/2014 01:40 pm

Same in the Indian SERPS. Any idea what's the way forward now? First there is one update which brings down a million troubles, we change everything and things start looking up, then this happens. From what I have observed (mainly in the keywords I keep a track of), it's a mix of old and new sites that are now coming in the top. Only one or two are relevant rest are all general blogging type posts. There is nothing in common in any of them so can't even conclude what they have done right and we have done wrong. Any light on this would be appreciated. Seriously am lost.

Nicholas

01/26/2014 02:23 am

One of my main money sites had been killed this January. I think the update made the algorithm more clever at detecting link wheels / link networks. I don't think i covered my footprints very well. The site isn't dead in the water, but there have been some severe drops.

terry

01/27/2014 11:57 am

Same here! My site was behaving good in last 3 months, because it is only 4 month old. I got average 250+ unique IPs at second and third months, so it is in the normal pace. But suddenly, January 9th-10th, my site tanked to only 10-20 IPs per day, all my longtails keywords dropped, the site still indexed. One more thing, my site has very few links, just 20 around blog comments(really), 10+ high PR bookmark links, thats all, and already done at the beginning. So, i have done nothing while the Penguin boy hit me, i really do not know what's going on here, Onpage SEO or Weak link profile and just normal, i need more powerful links?! GOD DAMN GOOGLE

Anwesha Bose

01/27/2014 12:17 pm

Does anyone have any idea what exactly the new guidelines or updates are, if any? We have to do something to regain the traffic. From what I observe, there is no set pattern or anything great done by the new sites that are coming up. In fact in the keywords that I have been following, the sites that are coming up now are pretty obsolete and have outdated information.

terry

01/27/2014 02:51 pm

AFAIK, google cant detect the IPs when you build a link on a web 2.0 or so

I also got hit by this and dropped from rank 5 to 131. Anyway, after some testing I was able to bring my page all the way back up to rank 6 in a couple of days of making my change. I wish I had more sites to test this on, but this is what I did: http://searchhighway.ca/the-answers-to-googles-2014-first-algorithm-update/

Hi Barry! I have also noticed that there was a possible Google update underway last January 9, 2014. There was a change is rankings as well as shifts in search results. I guess some SEO are not happy about this certain update made by Google.

It took about 10 days in total. During this time i boosted posts on my social media profiles, and uploaded some unique content with over 1000+ words in each article.

Looks like you just had a really bad link or two, not a "penalty". That happens sometimes. Sites with above average quality and popularity tend to get enough good links and usage that one or two bad ones don't matter like that. Hard to say, since you chose to be secretive about what the site in question actually is. Makes for bad analysis and leads to the assumption that you have been trying to game the system a bit too much. Definitely over-thinking it in an irrational way if you believe that using a keyword once in a title, description, and sensibly in the content would get you a penalty. You'll drive yourself mad trying to micromanage the SERPs. This is why you should focus on what you CAN control like content strategy and quality, rather than things you cannot control like Google updates. Or things you should not try to control so much, like links to your site. But just to fuel your paranoia: http://www.seobythesea.com/2012/08/google-rank-modifying-spammers-patent/ Read up on how Google's algorithm can sometimes see when you make changes like that and it will change rankings to trick you into believing something had an effect when it did not, or vice versa. That's why real case studies are done over long periods of time.

I think Google has made even more changes to their algorithm based on Algaroo.com, and I have been slapped AGAIN... back down to 5 organic traffic a day from 100 after i thought i recovered from the first slap. I have no idea what i am doing wrong, i only ever upload unique content... thinking of just removing my website altogether and just going blackhat, it seems blackhat websites do far better than whitehat anyway.

Maybe you boosted too much post in 1 attempt?. What i did is send disavow request, remove my overuse keywords on post tittle, delete all my post meta search description ( i prefer keywords on article body now ), delete some of my adsense unit and place them on various position. During this time i didnt listed my blog on search engine. Now i make it visible again, havent post new stuff yet. Dont want "spammy" google all in once. Some of my keywords is back again. So, I think it might be work. I will start publish tomorrow, and see how it goes.

Even we have noticed change is rankings. However one thing that is disturbing us is that Google webmaster is not showing proper data since 10th Feb. Is anyone facing the same issue?

I am making .edu backlinks for my education blog via blog commenting. Is the blog commenting bad for SEO and Google.

It just doesn't work like that. It's not that simple. If you are doing quality blog commenting that adds value, is relevant, and is in moderation then it is a good thing. If you do it in large excess, then it becomes obvious that you're just spamming. Nothing is set in stone though. Spam still works obviously, but if your site is in it for the long-term then you might want to avoid that. There are so many link sources out there that you can claim are natural. Do those instead of just blog comments. I'm a grey-hatter, I do things at scale, and I like it that way. But if you're exactly sure of what you're doing, or if you are trying to learn how build natural-ish links that are diversified check out Brians site http://backlinko.com.
