Last night, Google's Jade Wang announced in the Google Business Help forum that they have made an update to the area businesses can maintain and update their Google Places / Local Listing in Google Maps.
Jade said the changes are around the "verification and editing experience for users managing pages in Google+ (in the Local Business or Place category)."
Specifically what was changed includes:
- better status updates that tell business owners if their edits are pending or rejected
- progress bar to help business owners fill out the most essential information
- can now add categories via Google+
- updated look and feel (tell us what you think!)
Mike shared a screen shot of the new editor:

Its nice to see Google always improving the bits and pieces of its already well known and used services. They always strive for near perfection if not perfection. They strive for improvement and enhancement of a product all the time and never think that a product is complete.

Emmmmmm. What nonsense. This system has been broken for many, many months ans as Joe says below "they fixed problems that weren't really problems". What about the other absurdities still plaguing this system?

I can't say that I've seen any difference in Google Places for a local business I look after down in Sydney. The big G still has the mistake on the page that they admitted to saying that the page is under 'pending, being reviewed' where it's actually live. Here's the email I got from Google places: http://www.dariopetkovic.com/google-places-error-pending-being-reviewed/

Wow, have you been using Google Local/Place? It's the worst system Google has. It's buggy and confusing. They need to clarify and fix the system asap, GUI improvement is not what I am looking for.

Google places are barely about local business listings anymore. They are more about G+ and its ever failing user base.

It is about time this service shows improvements. And there is still a lot of room for more!
