Rick Klau of Google Ventures posted a video from Google's co-founder, Sergey Brin speech he gave last fall at Google Ventures CEO Summit.
He explained a story that most people do not know, how Google really got started.
Sergey said that they had an idea to make it easier for people to order pizza from local pizza stores using the Internet. In short, find a bunch of local pizza stores, get their fax numbers and send in an order via an internet to fax service. They coded up the program and it sent the fax and after a couple hours, no delivery came. So Sergey called to see if the pizza store got the order and they said, "let me check the fax machine." At that point, Sergey decided to move onto new ideas.
Here is the video:
Just amazing how things happen in this world.

It was a good idea. They were just early by like 6 or 7 years, and then using the wrong technology.

Fax or no, it still sounds easier and more intuitive than most pizza order forms.

That wasn't a very good idea to start with IMO however there are plenty of very good ideas out there that many don't succeed which is a little scary. Good product/idea/service doesn't guarantee success unfortunately.

Isn't he glad about that! ps. Not all good ideas see the light of day nor win over not so good ideas (think VHS over Beta)
