Google's First PageRank Update In 2013

Feb 5, 2013 • 7:58 am | comments (65) by twitter Google+ | Filed Under Google PageRank & Algorithm Updates

Google PageRank UpdateGoogle has begun pushing out new PageRank values to the Google Toolbar yesterday. This would make the first Toolbar PageRank update of 2013.

Normally Google updates PageRank values in the Google Toolbar every 3 months or so. The previous update was in November 2012 and before that in August 2012.

Despite PageRank still being part of the algorithm, SEOs know that toolbar PageRank is often outdated and not that useful. In addition, there are many other factors part of the algorithm that may or may not be as important as PageRank.

Even though, I hope your PageRank values increased and did not decline.

I have yet to see any change in any of my sites from the UK.

02/05/2013 02:05 pm

I keep getting frustrated with Pagerank. I know my blogs are growing but the number stays the same.

Saw my company's website go from a 5 to a 6 which felt nice. It would feel a lot better if we had increased traffic.

02/05/2013 02:40 pm

Well, it was about time to drop the next one, I hope it doesn't affect us too much

02/05/2013 03:06 pm

Don't worry. The PageRank toolbar is pretty useless. Keep growing your blog and you should see the traffic increasing. That is what is important, PageRank ain't.

My 1month old blog is currently PR1 with 10 post. Love to post more and backlink more. Wew

02/05/2013 05:31 pm

The most important thing is TRAFFIC. PageRanks are just a sideshow vanity metric. Sam

yes actually google awarded our site with page rank. however the distribution of pr unpredictable. in our blog page, one of the published article has been awarded by google with pr 3, but the mother page/blog page itself got only pr 1. i wonder why?

02/05/2013 06:25 pm

Page Rank depends totally depends upon traffic. PR is like peep in the table Nokia Mobile Specification

no a PR0 or N/A is the lowest. Don't rain on his parade...

Do your research first: "The Google Toolbar's PageRank feature displays a visited page's PageRank as a whole number between 0 and 10. The most popular websites have a PageRank of 10. The least have a PageRank of 0." Source: For those of you who wish to discredit Wikipedia, This article covers Google PR ranking very clearly:

also we have fixed that url to read for february :)

02/05/2013 09:38 pm

My bad quickly misread your post and thought I saw PR10 at the start. Seemed like you were somehow trying to correct him even though he said nothing wrong... N/A can be your pagerank though if you're not indexed so it would be the lowest in a sense. I definitely don't need to be reading wikipedia articles to learn about this lol

Seems like it only got updated for mostly new sites. No change in PR of old ones.

Congrats to those who's websites went up. Mine didn't change so I was wondering how long does it take for google to finish this update? However last time mine shot up and it felt really nice.

02/06/2013 06:43 am

My website's gets high boost. Previously it's page rank was zero(0) and now it's 4 page rank.

02/06/2013 10:40 am

One of the reasons could be that the article page prob has a lot of links with a high PR linking to it, resulting in the high PR for the article page and a low PR for the mother page/blog itself. So I would suggest checking how many external links for that specific article page you have versus how many for the main blog itself. Regarding PR updates, hmmm I don't trust it for one second.Just keep on building good quality content and you will get those good quality links :)

02/06/2013 11:12 am

Nothing changed for my site. Bwaah :(

02/06/2013 06:19 pm

A newer smaller site of mine went from no page rank to PR3. I was quite surprised as there is not a lot of content on the site yet, and only a few incoming links (although from higher PR sites). I have not put a lot of weight on the PR for a while now, however this large of a jump caught my eye.

i have pagerank 2 on my blog from november 2012. Now in 2013, I have the same, no change. why?

03/05/2013 06:20 am

03/06/2013 12:19 pm

No change for me

03/08/2013 06:36 am

one clients PR gone up from 3 to 4 after first month of seo in right time. But funny thing is seomoz domain authority went down. so it must be fake and waste of money.

03/11/2013 07:20 pm

In the same boat--- I think it is because I have not been commenting on relevant blogs. That is what I will be working on for the next three months, I do like the fact that they seem to be making it a regular pattern for updates.

03/16/2013 12:00 pm

My blog Official Stickman dropped from a PR2 to PR0 when I took it to a top-level domain just over a month ago, but the number of individual pages' PR increased. Maybe the redirect affected this, even though it is not a 'masked' redirect. I expect that the domain itself will increase once it is more than a few months old...

One of the compaines company I work for saw the pr go from 3 to 2 :( I'm looking at our incoming links to see if possibly google saw them as spammy. I don't know what else it would be we don't do anything black hat...fml

03/26/2013 05:00 am

What I have to do to get a page rank of four as I already have a page rank of 3.How many more links I have to build?

04/05/2013 10:12 pm

Surprised to see so many comments with poor grammar.... Kinda tells you that the Seo world is open to unskilled people who cannot even write in English... It's not my native language either, btw.

It was disheartening to see the page rank of drop from 3 to 2.

According to time parameters, next Google PR update is about to come. It would be might be in first 10 days of May. Any other comment? I have just launched my tech blog and waiting for some good response from Google.

04/28/2013 09:53 am

I agree. I dont give to much weight to PR. I had a site with PR 0 that received far more traffic than another site that had a PR 4.

David Viniker

04/30/2013 08:23 pm

I think PageRank is more important in webpage positioning than many are aware. Positioning depends to a large degree on the combined webpage and website authorities as indicated by the PageRank of the webpage and the PageRank of the HomePage of the website. There is a hidden boost in PR to that of HomePages to PR4.5 when the HomePage is itself competing for the keyword.

According to time parameters, next Google PR update is about to come. It would be might be in 27may to 7 June. (On the First update i got 3PR. And now and waiting for some good response from Google.)

06/12/2013 07:11 am

After reading some of these comments, I wonder if people are more interested in PR than anything else. If you are an e-commerce company, pr and traffic mean nothing if you are not making conversions. If you are a blog and making your money via advertising, then traffic is where you should be concerned. We are an SEO company and see many different types of customers. Everyone has their own opinion as to what is important to them and thir website. Jim.

This update is highly anticipated perhaps more than any after the recent panda/penguin . Maybe thats why its delayed as resources are diverted elsewhere , or perhaps Google is just messing with our heads, lol

In my opinion PR is very important for any site of any type because it help in gaining more visitors which are very important.

08/21/2013 06:24 am

Yes In my point of view Page Ranking for any web site is very important for us. By this way we know the page ranking on Google .
