Google's Matt Cutts: The Number One SEO Mistake Is...

Google Matt Cutts InvisibleIf you had to guess what the most common SEO mistake would be, what would you guess? Building a site of all images or in Flash? Not making a title tag that says home versus your core keyword phrase? Spamming Google? Nope.

Matt Cutts, Google's head of search spam, said it is not having a site at all.

In a fun video, where Matt goes invisible for parts of it, he says that is the number one mistake. If you do not have a web site, then Google does not know you exist. You are invisible to Google. So number one priority, get a web site.

Here is the video:

You know what's sad, there are thousands of useful questions that go unanswered and then we get this helpful tip? This has to be the most useless answer to a question going, its almost insulting! I cant believe people get paid for this!

The Number One SEO Mistake Is...believing that Google was your SEO partner over 10years ago. The Number Two SEO Mistake Is... believing that Google will remain your SEO partner for another 10years.

The number one SEO mistake is listening to Matt Cutts lie. Or was Matt Cutts directing his comments in this video to the big corporate clowns they are in cahoots with? Since there are so few small businesses listed in any visible position within Google's search results, it's almost the same as not having a site listed in Google anyway.

It's almost like the online economy is evolving and changing as an online presence becomes a real necessity for the big corporate players; necessitating both 'the basics' and creative thinking to establish yourself amongst the crowd. No, wait, you're right. It must be because Google is out to screw the little guy and Matt is evil. There is nothing that can be done, our failures have nothing to do with us and everything to do with the intentional destruction of small business. For a second there I almost forgot which comment section I was in.

I agree with you, but apparently this video is "fun". I can't stop laughing. "Ping!", there goes another rib.

Google is no one's "SEO partner". Never has been, never will be. They do not enter into partnerships with webmasters for organic ranking. Never have. Never will. They take money for AdWords but thisn't a "partnership" either, it's just a client-supplier relationship.

Yeah, you're right. There was no need for google to partner with anyone in the garage days. They had so much money, nobody was needed. Other than their Indian investor and 2 others + Amazon Other than providing SEO's all the nifty tools to keep TRACK of how things are. Hmmmm All the snifty tools have nothing to do with SEO's or partnering with them Bull crap

I like your first paragraph. In the late 90s and early 00s, amateur webmasters made a lot of money from the web, often because there were huge gaps in online presence from companies, and this gap was filled by their amatuer content / affiliate nonsense etc. Now everyone has an online presence, those amateurs have been found out. Their poor quality affiliate stuff has rightly been righly usurped by those offering meaningful content.

"Google is out to screw the little guy and Matt is evil" For once I agree with you, verbatim This started with the 2 dumb F8ck founders of Google when they sold out to advertisers. When the QUALITY of the information no longer became important When he who has the deepest pockets information (advertisement) is shown Yes, the screwing started then Now its worse. He who PAYS for payperclick ADWORDS is shown BELOW the nasty advertisements So you are right! The little guy cannot afford ADWORDS and doesn't feature The content & quality of searches has dropped and the consumer loses In fact, the actions of Google are akin to global terrorism

Everything has been written about already. Its just shuffling the words now - Ah yes SEO's call it spinning

True, the video is very funny, it was FUN to watch (if your 5)! Mat himself sounded like he was about to crack up at any moment, shame he was laughing at the webmasters ...

Hilarious, but also a bit sad, cause many businesses are still not on the web or have a horrible presence...

Clearly Matt does these to stir the pot. He knows he wasted 4500 minutes and growing of SEO peoples time with that video. Plus he apparently likes to geek out with the green screen because he's done that numerous times in the past year.

Wonder how it feels to be the most hated person working for the most hated company? And, he thinks it is all so funny. Just ask anyone of those millions of dead websites along the roadside how funny all this is.

Geeze, the rage in these comments is palpable. I'm sort of happy though - as long as Matt is producing dumb videos like this he still has a job as the head of Google Webspam and by extension SEO is still alive, keeping the rest of us employed for the moment.
