Mary Leakey was born today, a hundred years ago, in London, England and died at the age of 83 in Kenya, Africa on December 9, 1996.

Mary is most well known for her discovery of the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans. She spent much of her career working side by side with her husband Louis Leakey. Louis died at a younger age in October 1972.

Ugh, let's hope the Doodles group page isn't filled with angry christians once they realize who Mary Leaky is. "Oh, so you can give a doodle to her on her birthday but nothing for the birthday of the most important person-god-magical dove ever to live and to die to save your souls?!?!"
